Coincidentally, the two best films I’ve seen this year are prison dramas: Sing Sing and Great Freedom. Although rather different in truth, there’s enough connective tissue – esp. in how they explore the ties that bind men together in the worst of places – that they’d make a fascinating double bill.

There are too many 2024 films I’m yet to see, but I don’t know if any will surpass the best film I watched this year, Payal Kapadia’s A Night of Knowing Nothing (2021), a dazzling meditation on creative freedom and divisive politics that fuses documentary and dramatised material to poetic effect.

i know it's cringe to post star wars as ~revolution~ or whatever, & that's not what this is, but I do think about this sequence from Andor a lot bc I know how paralyzing it is to feel overwhelmed. So, I'll continue working in the lanes where I feel the most needed/helpful.
