On the 3rd day of fossils, my true love gave to me...

3 cyclocystoids!

I wouldn't be surprised if you've never heard of a cyclocystoid. They are one of the rarest fossil echinoderms and related to starfish and sea urchins. They are small and fall apart quickly after death.

Hi, I’m Emma, an illustrator, comic artist, and sculptor with a propensity for drawing dinosaurs, monsters, aliens, and spaceships, but especially dinosaurs.

I'm working on a sci-fi story with all of the above. Except dinosaurs, oddly no dinosaurs.

The Mesozoic mammal Sinodelphys, discovered in China and photographed at the Carnegie Museum, for #FossilFriday. Originally described as a marsupial but now thought to be an early placenta mammal, in my considered opinion this is clearly a creachure. 🧪⚒️

While hunting for fossils, the unexpected is sometimes discovered. These finds can range from pottery shards to this fulgurite, or "fossil lightning," formed when lightning strikes the ground.

Footprint fossils are important because they reveal the size of the animals that made them, their movement, and animal behavior. The 44,000 pounds of footprints collected at this site in Wyoming tell the story of tyrannosaurs ambushing a herd of hadrosaurs as they approached the river to drink.

While the new specimens described in this study are impressive, the other important thing is the maximum size of this animal. The animal has frequently been reconstructed to be over 2 meters tall with a wingspan of over 5 meters, but this is no longer true!

One of the best & most useful scientific figures when it comes to sauropods is this one from Jannel et al. 2022. It's visually clear & gives a good idea of which sauropods we have decent hind foot aka pes material for.
