Would be fucked up if you looked at your baby and it said 1/50 over their head, implying a pikmin is intending to abscond with them

And ON TOP of that madness - this game also has a glitch that lets you execute your current experience level with Blink as if it was a game script, so after doing the above, you can just beat the game!

RTA run with cartridge swap: youtu.be/RABlqJochyE

TAS: youtu.be/d8dR0Ta0ujQ
From the TAS description:

Chara #1 (Maria) will write data 0x43 to address $62bb as proficiency experience by equipping Blink's book as a weapon and choosing "attack" 67 times.

The formula is as follows:

Experience = initial experience + number of a

Initial experience: 20

• Action count: 67

Level reward: 20

Inn Event

The address $62bb written in the goblin battle is originally the event ID for the Inn.

1. The script pointer address (address $0072-$0073) is calculated from the event ID, and if ID# Ox43, data $0020 is written to the pointer.

2. Since address $0020 is used as the user's button input, data Oxe7 is generated to address $0020 when the user presses left, down, right, select, B, and A on the joypad.

3. When the script system reads it, the ending will begin.

In terms of what's actually happening here, there's no writeup in English, but it seems closely related to this TAS: tasvideos.org/7170S

Basically, FF2 RNG is seeded from uninitialized ram, and it *seems* Dr Mario is used just because the value it leaves there manips a rare battle and drop.
Exerpt of the description of a TAS that does a very similar route, but without any cartridge swap. ("Final Fantasy II improved TAS" by naruko)

"Encounter manipulation
The enemy group is determined by the player's position and address $00f7, and the value is incremented by a structured number of steps. The default value of address $00f7 in FCEUX is 0xff, and it is power-cycled to be the closest 2 to 0xff so that the Ogre Mage will appear."

(Not explicitly stated, but the fact that he refers to the default value in a specific emulator means that the game does not initialize this RAM.) Exerpt of a RTA speedrun by Hisakaki_Mimi where they are obtaining a book of Blink from an enemy's drops, shortly after having done a cartridge swap to Dr. Mario and back. Their description says:

"By replacing the cartridge with Dr. Mario, the memory inside the main unit is operated. The book of Blink is obtained from the enemy's loot, and the ending is performed according to the prescribed procedure."

Oh no, they've evolved infohazards

After some discussion on this topic, we were able to figure out how to make boo blocks actually stay still as they spawn. This way, their disguise ACTUALLY works - a bit crazy that we've been designing levels with them where this isn't the case for 25 years! #smw #romhacking

so, one of my favorite bugs in SMW has to be the way Boos work.
basically, when they spawn in, their initial direction isn't initialized properly so they always face right, causing them to "turn" to face Mario on-spawn
particularly noteworthy because makes Boo Blocks misalign and become obvious

well that's sort of separate to the userbase itself

(and truthfully I don't mind that as much as I mind bluesky blindly serving the most popular posts regardless of topic)

And casual/hobby people in general, but they're driven away by the shouters.

People criticized Threads a lot for actively suppressing political posts in the very early days but in retrospect it gave them a much healthier seed of users.

I try to mostly follow people on LinkedIn who are unafraid to shitpost on main
I removed all the chairs from my house. Yes, all of them.

Standing desks are for beginners. I don't sit anymore. Not at meals. Not during calls. Not ever.

Why? Because sitting is a dopamine sink. Your glutes go dormant. Blood pools. Your brain gets 23% less oxygen (I measured it). Standing keeps you in a state of "productive discomfort."

Discomfort = alertness. Alertness = pattern recognition. Pattern recognition = product-market fit.

I eat dinner standing over the sink. I take Zooms pacing back and forth like a caged lion. My calves are basically a pre-seed round for my cardiovascular system.

Studies show that 89% of Fortune 500 CEOs do their best thinking while in motion. Churchill held walking meetings. Zuckerberg did walking 1-on-1s. I haven't sat in 6 months and my sprint velocity is up 340%.

Every chair you own is a commitment to mediocrity. Every cushion is a compromise with your future self.

"But what about rest?" Rest is what you do after the exit. Right now, I have deals to close and a burn rate to justify.

My living room? Empty. Just space to pace. My dining room? A war room with whiteboards on every wall—no table.

Sitting is the new smoking. Standing is the new sitting. Pacing is the new standing.

I'm not uncomfortable. I'm optimized.

Don't let Big Furniture gaslight you.

I found a speedrun category where you have to film yourself going to mcdonalds right before the final boss. yes, it's a playstation game, no it's not a sonic
finny the fish McDonald's% speedrun category with 1 run of 53 minutes and 22 seconds Right before you attempt the final boss you must pause the game and go to the nearest mcdonalds. You must order food (Cannot just be a drink) and return home where you finish the game. You may not remote into your console or emulator to complete the run.

Actually nvm this is a LOT more than I expected for just text bsky.app/profile/mari...

Wii games have pretty small assets I guess

That is correct, however, please note that the way SMG does it results in the text taking up ca. 1/400 of the RAM at all times, which could be used for 1 or 2 extra objects. This was fixed in SMG2 by splitting it up on a per-galaxy basis, presumably for this reason. I hope this can be of interest!

tbf the memory footprint of plain text is completely negligible compared to basically anything else

new blog post! why do LLMs freak out over the seahorse emoji? i put llama-3.3-70b through its paces with the logit lens to find out, and explain what the logit lens (everyone's favorite underrated interpretability tool) is in the process.

Nuclear weapons are the obvious comparison of people knowingly working on apocalypsetech, but even that I don't think went this far.
