Madame Bader said signing up for social media was a stupid idea, but I'll show her! Even if we don't get more students signed up, we can improve our image to the Negro Spirituals that think we're uppity!

(Account promoting a YA novel about children at an all-Black magical school)
(We got a living Martha in Absolute Batman, and Absolute Superman was old enough to remember Krypton. So long as we're not married to background lore...can we get an Absolute Cyborg that has a healthy relationship with his dad? Im sick of reading him whine about Silas...)

( #bvm help a writer out? If I was trying to look up a list of older Black regional phrases where could I look? I'm trying to find a word or phrase that means "teacher" and I wanted to see if there are euphemisms from the Black folk culture of the US South I could consider...)

(I just want to let all the #blerd creators and #blackwriter that do speculative stories know:

If you are using the controversy surrounding Ketema in Black Panther to promote your own story, then you are weak.

Fuck Christopher Priest. But have confidence in your own merit!)

(I really don't like how these new liberal Blerds keep perpetuating the idea that nerdy, outcast Black kids are more susceptible to right wing radicalization. As if it's not actual hip hop stars that go around trying to give the MAGA movement street cred. 🧵)

(Writers and literary people! I'm not going to name names but can we create a new rule going forward that any magazine or anthology that has Voodoo in the title needs to be open to writers from Haiti, Benin, Louisiana, Togo, Ghana, and Nigeria?

That just feels fair and non-appropriative.)

WILL WRITE FOR MONEY. I have lots of projects I want to do, but I'm also interested in paying gigs. I prefer gigs that are challenging, fun and sans second-guessing. I need to know deadlines and pay. If I don't think I can do a job, I'll let you know asap. Contact me at tonyisa at ohio dot net.

Unpopular reality: Anyone can write and publish these days (not always well). The real trick is finding readers for and selling what you've written and/or published. Even harder is coming to grips with realistic expectations in a highly romanticised and increasingly disrupted industry.

my favourite genre of virtue scolding is when I get emails saying "I'd love to read your new book but I don't support Amazon, will there be any other way to get it?"

it's funny but when I would love to read a book, I generally look on my preferred non-Amazon platform *before* contacting the author.

If you're over the age of ten and arguing how powerful or not powerful a character is you might be reading comics wrong.

(Magic is already real. It's not a fantasy to escape to nor the ideal solution to all our problems. It cares little about morality, and no one is truly more special than the other because everyone is special in their own way. Magic simply is.)
Day 9 of #WIPPITStickyNoteQuestions. You can answer in the comments or quote. I can't wait to see all of your answers. Make sure to # us so we & everyone else can see them and have fun with it. 🥰📇✍️

Food 4 thought: How can you better do this? (You don't have to post)

(My one complaint about #Sinners is that niggas really bout to spend the next 30 years leaving their doors open without saying shit, and I'm too autistic for all that! I need clear and direct instructions! 😂)

In light of the hit movie Sinners, the Laveau Academy will host a free, two-week seminar on home defense against vampires and haints. Guest speakers from the Merlin and Morganne Academies will demonstrate methods effective against the Fey folk as well.

Don't worry y'all, the guests are Black, too!

The Student Radical Artists will be hosting their DIY Oracle Deck workshop at 6pm in the library.

When are the people who said nothing while student protestors were attacked for their free speech last year going to admit they made a catastrophic mistake? That would actually be useful. Weaken their rhetorical tools.

Admit you made a huge fucking mistake

(Okay other #writers I been out of the submission game for a minute and need some clarification on something. Trying not to be That Guy here but seeing submission calls from small publishers that pay as little as $10, and still don't accept reprints. ELI5? I feel like for that little pay...)

The Advisory Council has voted on the matter of AI art on public altars, and decided that any art of divine/spiritual figures must be made by humans.

Anyone caught in violation will be subject to one week of cleaning fairy dust from library books.

We told y'all to stop making them books float!

(reposting cuz I want the reccs too but also, this is why I was adamant to include Muslim characters in my series. The idea that Black identity is inherently Christian is something I'm specifically challenging in all my work.)
Was putting up a Ramadan display at my library and realized we don't have any YA fiction by and about Black American Muslims. A quickie google search didn't turn anything up either. Given that Black Americans make up nearly 20% of the US Muslim population, this seems like a big gap. Any recs?

(All my characters are nerds!

Marquise and Jerome bond over anime.

Marquise and Khadijah spend all their time together in the library, parallel reading.

Renèe plays her older brother's handed down Gameboy SP nigh obsessively, and she and Jerome have a years long gaming rivalry.)

(Little bit of lore dumping:

Renée and Jaime's mom doesn't trust any pharmaceuticals. Especially her mood stabilizers. She eventually found a blend of meditation, herbs, and isolation that helps. But she made mistakes along the way. And that's part of why Renée and Jaime can never leave the school)
Post a fictional character who you think would be an antivaxxer.

(In hindsight, it's kinda weird how our teachers were just like "Hey, Hunger Games is popular and we're teaching it anyway, let's host our own Hunger Games with the students!")

(And yeah I'm sure that not every school did that. But I also don't think my teachers were THAT creative lol)

Coyote vs. Acme is never gonna be released or leaked, so I'm gonna spoil a thing I read from the plot summary because it doesn't matter anymore:

The reveal that Coyote only sued Acme in order to get the Road Runner on the witness stand so he could trap him is a brilliant twist.

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.
Wired is dropping paywalls for FOIA-based reporting. Others should follow
