Another good reminder that the older I get the better I understand the professor's comment of "what do they teach them in schools these days?" from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

I can't tell whether or not this is a good thing.

Does anyone have suggestions for SF & F in which the main character is a full time wheelchair user?

OK - pie discourse - best pie story:

In 2016, we were living in Andover, in the UK. My wife was assigned as an exchange officer at the Army Air Corps base at Middle Wallop (yes, really).*

The US Army has a tradition: senior leaders, in dress uniform, serve junior troops Thanksgiving dinner.

Art. I of the Constitution gives Congress the power to make rules and regulations for the armed forces — including codes of discipline and strictures against following illegal orders. You can’t punish members of Congress for articulating those rules. Also protected by Speech and Debate Clause.

Military ethicist here. I used to be Associate Chair of Leadership, Ethics, and Law at USNA. We consistently taught our midshipmen that they should refuse to obey illegal orders. The Uniform Code of Military Justice makes this obligation clear. “I was just following orders” is not an excuse, period.

ever since I learned about three-cueing I've developed infinitely more patience for replies on social media. mfers literally do not know how to read. people are walking around conjuring random meanings into words they don't know, and they don't know a lot of words. it's crazy

I don't think I disagree with the thesis that AAA games could be priced higher. I do sort of wonder whether, if they were, overall games spending would change (increase?), or just shift.
AAA video games should cost $100 on launch. this would still be extremely cheap for the amount of time and enjoyment you get out of them! But an audience of whiny babies has kept them literally at the same price for *two decades* despite both general inflation *and* sector-specific costs rising

This administration has been, by far, the most censorial administration in my lifetime. They're punishing people for speech about Palestine, about Charlie Kirk, about ICE, about the President. It's been nonstop attacks on speech.

The trump administration has been murdering people off the coast of Venezuela. This is not a small technical thing or an abstract constitutional testing of the war powers. Even if everyone on the boats were exactly who the Trump admin says they are they aren't enemy combatants, just criminals.
Trump has been illegally bombing boats off the coast of Venezuela.

Tim Kaine and Adam Schiff forced a vote on reasserting Congress's role over war powers and ending this reckless
warmongering.

It failed 48-51.

Murkowski and Paul voted yes.

Fetterman voted no.

This is personalism. It's the Charles I scenario -- the king rules without the a legislature and simply taxes and spends in whatever way he feels like.

Impeach, remove, disqualify.
Well that's not how appropriations work at all

we very specifically and over decades had earned a reputation for being a place where you could come and study or work and be treated ~fairly rather than tyrannically.

that reputation was a big deal. I hope in time we can rebuild it.

I have a couple of comments about the "free speech hero" narrative about Charlie Kirk.

First, was Charlie Kirk really notable for supporting the free speech of people he disagreed with? I haven't noticed that, though I could have missed it.
