Yup. 100% co-signed.

Also, the stories in the comments rock.

As an instructor, I'd rather see your fever dream, No Doze-fueled 4AM essays written at an IHOP rather than anything generated by an LLM.

Hope this helps

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

Damn, I thought this would end with him having a private salt-water pond stocked with halibut that was guarded by guard-geese against the canny coyotes who tried to go fishing. You know, plus more Greek expletives. Great thread, anyway!
nevtelen.bsky.social
It would be interesting to see how he does vs MLS defenders. Hope it happens.

The best book-mail is the stuff that takes you unawares. Totally forgot I preordered this, but I'm soooo happy with Past Me rn.
The cover of Premee Mohamed's The First Thousand Trees, which I am extremely psyched to read

This was on my timeline and now it's on yours. You're welcome!

Somehow, this takes the original and makes it even awesomer. Which is realistically never something you can really ever say about Waterson's work.

I'm sorry, but this is not funny. Jacket breast pockets only do this when they're in extreme distress.
nevtelen.bsky.social
I could see that. I've only had Trader Joe's harissa, but it's not terribly dissimilar.

I eat erős pista with a coffee spoon sometimes.

(Fyi, for those who don't know what that is:

After I finish The Late Breakfasters, I'm planning to shift over to dark fantasy and dive into Kerstin Hall's Asunder.
nevtelen.bsky.social
So many! Gotta say, though, that @sgj.bsky.social just writes horror that is on another level. I'm extremely excited to dig into The Buffalo Hunter Hunter later this month.
nevtelen.bsky.social
I just bought this and didn't include it here for this month for exactly this reason - I've heard so much about it, I figured I'd want to process every story a bit.

I just finished a space opera and am sliding into a bit of weird fiction, both solidly in my normal wheelhouse.

Game of Thrones.

I always thought I should read the books first, so I never watched the show, but then I'm not all that into epic fantasy and they're really long, so... yeah.

breaking bad

not because i'm so cool or anything, i just thought i can't be arsed to invest so much time into something like that

Inspired by a post I just saw in which someone admitted they hadn’t seen a single episode of Friends nor the film Love Actually… what cultural hole do you have that’s a bit weird for your generation?

I’ll go first: I haven’t seen Dirty Dancing.
nevtelen.bsky.social
I started The Late Breakfasters. I love Aickman, but so far this is seeming a bit different that his short fiction. Still waiting for the weird to hit.

1-866-952-4456 to tell Netflix that in no way do you want Elon fucking Musk determining what you watch.

I just called, got through in about 15 seconds, and told them that I strongly support queer inclusion in their programming and that I will cancel my subscription if they cave.

1. Led by Elon Musk, the far-right has exploded in a campaign to get Netflix to remove shows with queer and trans characters.

If Netflix capitulates to their demands, an already strained market for LGBTQ+ animators might become even more dire.

Elon Musk Leads Campaign To Force Netflix To Remove Shows With Trans Characters
Musk's posts have been seen by tens of millions of users, and many conservatives are now attempting to force Netflix into a removal of LGBTQ+ content.

It's probably about double what I normally read in a month, but to be fair I only have about 50 pages left in The Salvage Crew since I started that last week, so that barely counts.

The asteroid quite possibly set off the Deccan Traps into overdrive. They were active before it hit, but not in the way they were after. It's a current theory, anyway. Not sure how it could ever be proven.

Just in case anyone who follows me needs to make a dent in their TBR piles in October as the Long Dark settles in, you might give the OcTBR Challenge a go. I've done it for two years now and it's fun. #books

📚 Happy OcTBR Challenge to all who celebrate! 📚

The rules are easy: we all have stacks of books waiting to be read, right? Well, this is the month that we aim to read as many of them as possible! That's it. We simply cosy up, read some beautiful, scary, funny, heartfelt books, and enjoy ourselves.
nevtelen.bsky.social
This is what I'm trying to read in October! Nowhere near my full tbr stack, but one chunk at a time, right?
A stack of books on a table, including Nifft the Lean by Michael Shea, Crypt of the Moon Spider by Nathan Ballingrud, The Late Breakfasters by Robert Aickman, Asunder by Kerstin Hall, The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones, and, my current read The Salvage Crew by Yudhanjaya Wijeratne.
nevtelen.bsky.social
I can only give a little, but I hope you can raise what you need. I'm so sorry you have to endure this.
nevtelen.bsky.social
Hope he feels better soon, but this is not as concerning as it would have been even last season.

I think this idea comes from the notion that small towns are "the real America" and big cities need to, I don't know, pay obeisance to them or something?
nevtelen.bsky.social
I'm kinda surprised there's no bullwhip. Too expensive, I guess.
