There is a big gap, writing-wise, between the last Kull tale & the first Conan tale. In that gap, Howard was writing historical adventure fiction, horror stories, began corresponding with H. P. Lovecraft, fully embraced his Celtic phase, & wrote his Bran Mak Morn tales. All of these went into Conan.

After reading all Howard's Conan stories a few years back, I'm reading all his Kull stories. I was expecting the tales to be very similar, but so far they are quite different. Any ideas as to why this is?

I'd recommend writing a new story, though there is no rule against submitting a new draft of your story from this year.

Just as general writing advice, we find you tend to get more improvement in writing craft from moving on to a new story than staying on the same one.

FWIW, I can tell you that our next submission window will be August of 2026 so you can aim for that, if you choose.

I have sent out every rejection email I'm sending out today. If you have been rejected, as much as possible please do not be discouraged. This was a very competitive submission window. If you have gotten a "shortlisted!" email then congrats! If you have NOT received a email, that means you're still being considered. There are a few I'm curious about for my own reasons, and there are several stories which were graded as good enough for the shortlist but our readers couldn't quite fit them into the limited number of spaces I gave them to make up that list. Thus it is possible I will go through the shortlist, not feel I've found enough stories to meet my needs, then move on to your "medium-list" tales - I hope that makes sense.
