Frankly, Powell reminds me of Judge Webster (different fields, but a similar competence and demeanor). It’s amazing he’s still in place. He ought to be studied by children, like a museum piece.
Jerome Powell is like a ghost from our pre-2016 past. A sober, responsible, patriotic public official. His kind are nearing extinction. And isn’t it obvious why the Trump GOP would be hot to get rid of him? He’s the opposite of Trump-Vance-Hegseth-Noem-RFK-Gabbard-Patel …

Over 100 members of Congress have mounted replicas of a plaque honoring the police officers who defended the U.S. Capitol during the January 6th insurrection outside their offices -- because House Speaker Mike Johnson has disgracefully refused to install the official one.

During Fiona Hill's testimony to Congress on Oct 14, 2019, she described how Trump and Putin discussed exchanging Ukraine for Venezuela. The quid pro quo was if Trump refuses to help Ukraine fight off a Russian invasion, Putin would not help Venezuela (a Russian ally) resist a US takeover.

this is the simple answer to people who keep saying NATO expansion matters. Sure, it matters because it presented an obstacle to Russian imperial ambitions. Putin didn't invade because he hated NATO expansion, he hated NATO expansion because he wanted to invade

In English we know it as “Carol of the Bells,” but the melody arises from a Ukrainian folk tradition of songs welcoming the new year and summoning the forces of nature to meet human labor and bring prosperity.
Do listen.

Another beautiful Shchedryk performance amidst ruins.

It was set in what used to be a DTEK thermal power plant — now destroyed by russia.

The contrast between russia’s destructive nature and the Ukrainian will to create beauty even in the darkest times is palpable.

My grandfather didn't have $1 million for a Trump Gold Card. He was 10, poor, and didn't speak any English. He ended up making good, and a lot of money. I wrote about him in 2018. I liked us better when we understood what the American Dream meant to the world. www.usatoday.com/story/opinio...
My grandfather wouldn't be allowed into America under Donald Trump's policies
Trump's campaign-trail immigration slurs are now policies and tragedies. Latest example: Hundreds of families still separated despite a judge's order.

One theory I have is that competence, self-control, responsibility, and expertise have all been feminized, leaving “masculinity” with the realm of impulsivity and petulance. So the divide is not really between “femininity” and “masculinity” so much as between adulthood and childishness.
Everything else aside, the idea that this is a model for many men of *masculinity* is so wild. This? This is "manly"? This is how people think it's cool to act?

Remember: Trump or Russian propagandists might say otherwise, but Putin is not winning, and the Ukrainians are not losing.
I am told that internal Ukrainian army information shows that more than 26,000 Russian soldiers were killed or critically wounded in the month of November. Confirmed by videos. No wonder Putin wants to get Trump to give him territory for free

14yo: if St Patrick was alive today, he’d probably try to explain the Trinity through men’s products that are like shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. It’s three in one and the only thing you need in the shower! Just like Jesus!

The irony is that a century ago, the exact same kind of religious bigotry that Cuomo’s embraced down the stretch — we can’t elect someone from that faith or they’ll impose it on all of us! — was aimed squarely at Catholics like Cuomo.
Boy Mamdani's race is really a vivid reminder that anti-Islamic bigotry is 100% accepted in US public discourse. People don't even bother dog whistling, it's just right out in the open.

Most important thing about Islamaphobic smears is they’re Islamaphobic smears, and Cuomo and backers push them.

But also, like a pebble in my shoe—

Al Qaeda and ISIS are fundamentalist Sunni! Mamdani is relatively secular Shia and standing for election in America! Jihadists would readily kill him.

Both. Obviously both. Plus everyone in between and some outside those parameters too.

If you don't want to express support, say locales have a right to pick who they want and Trump's wrong to interfere, threatening more lawbreaking.

I’ve been thinking a lot about a new kind of polling I’d like to see. We have polling that measures public opinion, which is obviously important, but I’d love to see a little more empirical work on public knowledge: what do voters know about politics and policy?
