I am leaving Rochester NY after attending the retirement fest of four giants in the field of evolutionary biology including my PhD advisor. This visit gave me a chance to revisit old haunts and reflect on my own somewhat unlikely origin story. 1/n

The UPS tax. They are the worst.

How bad are tariffs going?

I paid for $32 of shaving cream from Canada. Unique stuff I’ve used for years, nothing like it in US. Small family business.

UPS guy came to my door today with box and said I have to pay additional $120 before he can hand it to me.

That makes it 5x more expensive!!! 🤯
Screenshot of message from UPS:

Hi Adam,
All import fees must be paid prior to delivery.
Save time - prepay online for your FREIGHTCOM shipment. If import fees are not paid before delivery, an additional surcharge will be applied.
Total Amount Due
119.20 USD
Additional charges may have been applied based on recent tariff policy changes.

yep. You can't make a 'better case' that convinces tyranny of the value of science since knowledge is tyranny's kryptonite.

This moment from our latest episode with science writer @edyong209.bsky.social is 🔥

We asked Ed — how do we talk up the benefits of science in the face of government cuts? He told us that's the wrong approach. 🧪

A new study from Duke, led by Jonathan Campbell, PhD, reveals that pancreatic alpha cells do more than produce glucagon — they also generate GLP-1, a hormone that boosts insulin and regulates blood sugar.

I know I’ve been posting a lot about this, but it’s telling of how this government looks at society that at the very moment Mark Carney can’t stop talking about nation-building projects, he’s throwing the biggest nationwide service-delivery network on the scrap heap because it doesn’t make money.

I have gotten a bit behind at sharing the lab’s latest work - this paper is now published - check it out! www.cell.com/cell-reports... Long story short: insulin is the major determinant of female fat storage, with a relatively minor effect on males.

Oh Canada, don’t look this gift horse in the mouth. Highly skilled people have just been priced out of the US. Come north where the only taxes on your brain are the worlds most important scientific questions that you’ll help to answer.

Those on an H1B cannot return to the US from tomorrow (Sunday) unless paying $100K. This is an out-of-the blue presidential action. We’ll see software engineers stranded abroad.

One easy to predict outcome: those on US visas will travel less… for work, for conferences etc.

A new #ClinicalTrials unit at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital in Vancouver will allow B.C. life sciences companies to test early-stage drugs locally.

It's the first facility in the province with the capacity to perform non-oncology Phase 1 clinical trials: https://bit.ly/4pzFQNu

In Canada, proposed cuts of 15% across the federal government would have a dramatic effect on already globally decimated research & science.

Join Canada's research & science community and tell PM Mark Carney to preserve the funding promised in 2024.

Congratulations to Taylor Scheidl, the senior PhD student in the Thompson lab, on her new preprint 🎉 She showed that offspring born to obese dams are more likely to become obese due to more proliferation in early-life adipose progenitors, which leads to higher adipocyte numbers.

I can see why folks in BC might applaud the brutal indecision of the NDP government when it comes to making tough financial decisions because it means fewer cuts in the short term.

But boy, lemme tell you, Budget 2029 is going to be freaking brutal.
