Nights & Knights Games is the joint effort of two eccentric nerds living in central Massachusetts. When we’re not designing or playing games, we’re tending our pollinator garden or watching TV with our talkative cat.

"They crawled out of the world's guts, and every night ate any flesh they could find. They fled from armies, hid from light. We could only beat them by facing them in darkness."

Worldbuildy shower thoughts: What if Baba Yaga's chicken-legged walking house is a special domesticated breed of mimic?

Worldbuiding ideas, practice round!

I like to watch 90s infomercials to come up with game items. Super absorbent microfiber towels? How about a cloth embroidered with sigils of sympathetic magic and elemental water that can absorb 1d4 liters of water a round for 1d6 rounds?

Worldbuilding idea, artifact edition:

A sentient "intro" grimoire that's full of completely legitimate spells, but one of the first spells is a well-written ritual to summon a very powerful old demon.

Its purpose is to find and weed out any stupid/overconfident mages early on.

Ways not to start a campaign:
"In the magical realm of New Jersey."
"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a newly annointed Paladin must be in want of a nemesis."
"Everyone *else* is three kobolds in a trenchcoat."
"You can be any alignment as long as it's not lawful."

In the village fair, they clasped a jeweled necklace around the fattest pig and set her loose. Farmers and hunters gave chase, slipping in mud and tripping over roots. The pig squealed with glee—knowing she was the real winner of the game.

#indieauthors Most books about How to Write are little more than exhortations to "sit your ass down and just write". This is valuable advice, but sometimes you need/want something a bit more "nuts and bolts". Try "The Elements of Eloquence" by the always entertaining & informative Mark Forsyth

Bad TTRPG PC Idea

Ex-retail worker, now turned adventurer.

No matter how tough the work seems to get, they just don't seem all that bothered, and even seem HAPPY to fight dragons instead of argue with Karens.

Real talk, has nobody ever considered that if magic "knows" what 300 gold worth of diamonds is, you basically have a perfect appraisal tool for certain industries?

Gone are the days of hyper expensive wedding rings! I can't even cast Revivify with this rock, I know it's worth!

#TTRPG
If you spent six hours a day arguing over the difference between "1000 Gold worth of diamonds at market value" and "1000 Gold worth of diamonds at discounted value" you'd want to fight dragons too.

The Bay Area is going to do two things to me, and I cannot fight it.

1. Make me a clown. Everyone is a clown. It's all CLOWNS.

2. Make me start a YouTube channel where I just explain game design terms. No frills. No production value.

Okay maybe I will use one puppet.

My greatest DnD moment: BBEG a thread

Clanger: 7’4” tall warforged cleric, constructed of faded pink rosewood and black iron bindings.

Me: On a scale of zero to max HP, how sturdy is that lifeboat she’s on?

DM: What are you casting?

Me: Call Lightning (3d10)

DM: 25 to destroy the motor

For the TTRPG designers out there, I just read a game today that tells me something obvious - the designer plays. They run games. Please run other people’s games and your games. A. Lot. It will show up in your work. (Says the guy who designed no games 😆)

Take this with a grain of salt but in my experience the most vocal online do not mean they are right

In ttrpgs the players do not always need to win, though the situations do need to be WINABLE, the distinction being that the win condition may not always be the same as what the players expect
I see a lot of DM content that is all about putting obstacles in your party’s way that can be seen as combative. But then I hear people say, “the players always have to win! You’re just there to tell the story!” Granted, when I first started DMing, I didn’t think I would enjoy sessions.

Unconventional #TTRPG #DM tip

Make this prop. Use this roll table. Try this trick. Write it like this. RP your NPC like this. Every DM should know this. The Secret to this.

I feel like Ive become a worse DM over time listening to all this online "advice"

Run YOUR game, people. Not someone else's.

We need to get past this idea that TTRPG as a term is a measurement of quality when it is merely a descriptor.

It seems many folks justify "playing pretend" in the same way folks justify hobbies by them being productive or enlightening.

Fun for fun's sake is reason enough! Be a dinosaur!

Well… I did it… I just emailed Team Cherry, the creators of Hollow Knight explaining who I am and asking them if they want to chat. Maybe nothing will come of it, but hey. Gotta try, right?

I would love to design the Hollow Knight TTRPG. It would be a dream come true.
