there’s something in the air because i was just chatting about this with a coworker. there was fear & uncertainty but there was also this incredible sense of “we’re in it together”. people went outside, distilleries churned out sanitizer, friends knit masks. bet the New Deal felt like that.
I got a flu booster today and it made me reflect on the sense of national accomplishment I felt when I drove to a public facility, waited in my car until my number was called on an app, and got my first covid jab. It's fucked the right gets to erase what a moment of technological liberation that was

As every election, worth pointing out that the Greens win 1-2 reps seats despite winning 12% of national vote, while the Nats win 10+ seats on just 4% of natl vote

This. As someone studying populism & the far right for over a decade, it drives me insane when Aussies pat themselves on the back for compulsory voting allegedly keeping these guys out. Sure, that's 1 factor, but the main explanation is that they're weird, unlikeable & terrible at party organisation
Australia is blessed again by the fact that its right-wing politicians are so bad, so moronic.
Hanson, Dutton, Palmer, Roberts, Rennick, Babet etc.
I genuinely fear for us when a half-competent one emerges though.

The Liberal party now only holds two seats previously held by its leaders - Wannon (Fraser) and Cook (Morrison). Voters comprehensively rejected it. The question is - will Labor?

Australia rejected the right's agenda, we'll see if Labor do the same
We are about to find out whether the Labor government has the bravery to govern without the approval of right-wingers.

I think you'll find the feminists and trans activists were all on the same side of the barriers..

There is nothing feminist about transphobia

At the counter-rally to a TERF/Nazi rally in Melbourne. One of the TERFs just said that she was happy to side with Trump for his attacks on trans people, and that it was more important that trans women lose their rights than it is to keep abortion rights. TERFs are not feminists.

This #Midsumma I've been reflecting on the importance of pride.

As a kid growing up I didn't feel a lot of pride.

I knew I was queer for a long time before I came out.

I had desperately hoped that if I tried hard enough I could be straight and be like 'everyone else'. 1/

They're killing communities.
They're killing the planet.

So how are these gigantic tanks still allowed on our roads?
Gigantic SUVs are a public health threat. Why don’t we treat them like one?
