The incredible Cockerell's dorid nudibranch (Limacia cockerelli). These get up to 25 mm long, feed on bryozoans, live from 0-35 meters, and range from Alaska to Baja. I never get tired of these! #tidepools #nudibranchs #seaslug 🦑🦀
A small white sea slug with dozens of tentacles (cerata) that look like candy corn: each is white for 3/4 of its length then has a reddish orange stripe, and an orange, blunt tip. Was able to take a Slug Safari with our local nudibranch expert and got to check Steinberg's corambe off my list! #MolluscMonday #Invertebrate
Underwater photo of a crust comprised of tightly packed rectangular white structures. On top of the crust there is a slightly more cream coloured circle and a few disorganized loops of egg ribbon.

DOTOS! These little cuties are tiny little sea slugs - the hammerhead doto (Doto amyra). They can be difficult to find, especially if it's 6am and you haven't had any coffee (a kind tidepooler pointed these out for me, for the record). These grow to a whopping 14 mm long. #monterey #nudibranch🦑🦀
A tiny little nudibranch on red algae; the nudibranch is white with many paired cerata on its back shaped like clusters of white nodules. It's got short, white rhinophores. This one was perhaps 6-7mm long. A tiny little nudibranch on feather boa kelp; the nudibranch is white with many paired cerata on its back shaped like clusters of white nodules. I also got to see my favorite little sea slug.

And I can’t get over that it’s called a nudibranch and it’s found at Pleasure Point.
A photo of a sea slug against the backdrop of sand. Its body is somewhat transparent with streaks of light blue. It has dozens of short brown spike like appendages on its back flowing in the water. They almost look like a sea anemone.

California coast inspired enamel pins 🌊💕

available here! shop.fossilforager.art
A photo of a large enamel pin featuring a leopard shark, kelp, garibaldi, and a bat ray. The pin is gold plated and has a dark blue ocean background. An enamel pin of an opalescent nudibranch, a colorful sea slug with a light blue body, yellow and blue stripes, and orange flame-like projections. A tiny enamel pin of a blue-banded hermit crab, a brown hermit crab with a black and orange shell from a turban snail. It has blue-tipped legs. A tiny enamel pin of a California chromodorid nudibranch. It is dark blue with yellow spots, and lighter blue stripes markings along the edges of the body.

An aeolid nudibranch, Anilao. No idea what sort, alas.

Stunning work from the weekend's Gouache Critters class featuring sea slugs!!! Everyone picked such great nud(ibranch)es!! 🪸

Plan ahead for August's class, which will feature crabs!!! 🦀 Because everything becomes crabs in the end.
Gouache painting of a green spiny sea slug of some sort on black paper I'm so sorry I will not be able to ID literally any of these!! Several people at a messy art table with lots of printed reference of nudibranches, working on gouache paintings. Gouache painting of a bluish nudibranch with bright orange spines on black paper, sitting on a table next to its printed photo reference. Three people smiling at camera, each holding their own small painting of a colorful sea slug.

A female #EmperorShrimp on her mobile home, a #SpanishDancer #Nudibranch, seemingly wearing a blonde and red streaked wig (Nudi gills).

#ColorOfTheDay #RedWednesday
#photooftheday #PhotoHour #PhotographersUnited #photographerofbluesky #RedWed #photography #macro #underwaterPhotography #nature
In the center of the image, a small, brightly colored shrimp sits on a soft, fleshy surface. The shrimp — a female emperor shrimp — is slender and vibrant, with a reddish-orange body speckled with tiny white dots. Its legs are a mix of red and purple, and its elongated body and antennae give it a graceful, delicate appearance.

She is perched on the undulating, cushion-like body of a Spanish dancer, a type of sea slug named for the way its body moves like flowing fabric. The Spanish dancer’s body is thick and velvety, with shades of pink and peach, and it has frilly, feathery gill structures extending outward. These gills look like soft coral or sea fans, with pale cream and orange veins running through them.

The overall feel of the image is intimate and colorful — a tiny shrimp finding shelter and companionship within the folds of a much larger, gently pulsing host in the quiet beauty of the sea.

Another pleasant dive at Old Garden Beach in Rockport, MA. Another dive with a +12.5 diopter + 30mm lens. Water was warm and we were shallow, so we managed 75 minutes.

I think 3 Doto Coronata nudibranchs on the sides and 2 Eubranchus exiguus in the center surrounded by knotted thread hydroids. All of this is on a tiny section of a large blade of sugar kelp. Dendronotus frondosus nudibranch with a few northern lacuna snails on a blade of sugar kelp. That giant black object in the foreground is the tip of my finger. Doto coronata nudibranch among the knotted thread hydroids on a piece of sugar kelp. The bubbly looking things are nudibranch egg clusters. Haven't found an ID for this one just yet, but working on it!

slipping in with Nudibranch!

Initially thought to be an oceanic mutant mollusc, locals were baffled by the fact that it appears to have a deathclaw skeleton beneath the translucent fleshy skin. It was seen attempting to dismantle and eat settlement lighting, unbothered by electrical current.
A digital illustration of a deathclaw standing upright. It is a pale green with fleshy tendrils and gills emerging from its head and a split in its chest. Its thin translucent skin reveals its eyeless skull and ribs. A closeup of the previous image, showcasing the skull, gills and fleshy polyps decorating its back.

The September issue of Highlights magazine is out, so I can finally talk about my article about Sea Angels. They're sweet and pretty, quietly flapping through the sea... until they detect prey, their head splits open, and the tentacles come out.
scanning electron photos showing the head of Clione. The first photo shows the cute head and folded flaps of a sea angel; the second photo shows the head splitting open to release tentacles and buccal cones.

Since I'm working on writing and have nothing to share at the moment, here's a charcoal drawing of a clione (sea angel) I did last year.

Just a reminder that I'd LOVE to repost your nudibranch photos and art, but many of them don't have descriptive alt text, so I pass them by.

Good alt text makes this place more inclusive.

The image showcases an intensely red marine creature with intricate textures. Its skin appears beaded, resembling a surface covered in tiny domes or almost like the texture of dragon scales or ornate coral. The focus is on a prominent anatomical feature in the foreground: two thick, horn-like structures—these are the rhinophores, sensory organs used by nudibranchs to detect chemicals in the water.

The rhinophores are ridged and taper to rounded tips, standing out with darker red striping against the brighter red background. The rest of the body behind the rhinophores is composed of the richly textured surface that glows with hues of crimson, magenta, and bright red, illuminated vividly by the camera’s light source.
