Fantasy RPG setting where cooking works the way it does in crafting-based video games, like if you assemble a sandwich just right it can let you shoot fire from your eyes and shit, so cooking is a tightly regulated art. You can get thrown in a dungeon for marinating without a license.

New* article!

A history of Ocarina of Time's development, with a specific focus on the new game design problems presented by 3D, and how they solved them.

*I wrote this a few years ago for a magazine. I figure it's been long enough, so on my blog now!

I'm too disorganised to actually run a game of #dnd but I keep thinking about an evil campaign where the party is trying to rebuild an old necromancer's castle, and having to deal with nosey heroes and opposing cultists while trying to persuade the local villagers to join their cause.

A while back I was trying to find how to make rope physics WITHOUT a physics engine.
Was surprisingly difficult to find at the time.

So for anyone searching for the same in future:
You're after "Verlet integration" or "Verlet Rope" ❤️

Great tutorial: toqoz.fyi/game-rope.html

My partner, after her second Pokemon battle: So wait, do I have to go through all of this tall grass?
Me: They want you to interact with the game's primary mechanic, yes

(She's enjoying beating trainers, though!)

Hmmmm
I'm gonna chronicle my steam backlog adventure here because I think that might be neat.

My goal: get through about 20-30 minutes of gameplay of all the 150ish unplayed games I have in my library, including some games I know I'll love, some I got on a whim, and some I do not remember buying at all.

I've seen RPGs with Holy/Dark damage types where high-tech weapons inflict Dark damage because they represent the subjugation of Nature to the will of Man or whatever, and I REALLY want to invert that reasoning. Getting punched by a robot does Holy damage because robots are free of Original Sin.

This is a fantastic article about writing in games, and the perils of making a player-centric world where the protagonist is permitted to solve every problem they encounter. Highlight recommended for anyone who wants to make their world more complex and real!

Uhhhh tell me about an older game that you loved? I really enjoyed Landstalker on the Sega, that was a lot of fun.
