do you have any idea how nuts it is that people have lost their jobs for implying that Trump supported and encouraging the Capitol Hill riots when that is exactly what happened lol. we were all there in real time watching him tweet 'stop the count'. this is hysterical

Remember: There is nothing natural or inevitable about extreme inequality; it’s the result of an economic system that values wealth and power over human dignity and justice.
It doesn't have to be this way.

This is such a polite way of saying it too because it was unhinged and virulent racism and sexism not chewing with his mouth open — and standardly not "a discovery he made". Women are so gracious to a pure hater, liar, and abuser even in death.

I met James Watson at a local conference in graduate school.
Watson apparently “over-learned that his bad manners were tolerated because of the greatness of the discovery he had made.”
Kindness is a legacy that he failed to leave.

Nancy Pelosi secretly being queen of the stock market and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez vocally opposing elected officials profiting off the stock market feel like intrinsically connected facts that quietly explain their instant bad blood the minute they became House colleagues
There’s a cottage industry of investors who monitor former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s disclosed stock trades, match her every move, and usually make a profit along the way.
That trend will now end in 2027.

The debate around care visas in the political space boils down to people saying stuff like this - we desperately need people.
It's a good soundbite but...
A significant surge in care visas were issued since 2020 in response to sector demand and yet the problem of shortage has persisted.
Why?

I enjoyed this multi-stranded thread. It reminds me that folk fall into 2 groups; those who think good manners and politeness are about making others feel comfortable and those who use them as a weapon to put others in their place.
So much of this stuff is just gate-keeping, which too widespread for comfort, and one of the absolute worst human traits. "I have the secret knowledge that you don't have"; or "you're not from round here".
I loathe everything about it.

Let's talk about linguistic arseholery. I have been thinking lately of examples of people being dickishly pedantic (or just wrong-headed) about what to call things. Three examples below, starting with the well-known case of Anthony Powell. 🧵
