was reminded about this cool article (+ more links/thoughts in the thread) about movie subtitle fonts and lettering in japanese and how cool the history of it is. one guy's idiosyncratic style and choices like 80 years ago became the standard. also kinda ahead-of-its-time-style accessibility subs
if i had different skills i would make the youtube video essay about how the weird font i've seen in some video games' subtitles led me down a rabbit hole into the genius film subtitles done by hideo sato, but here's an amazing article that covers his work
