Awesome thread that also got my thinky parts going because I exist at the intersection of every side of this discussion and I'd like to share those thoughts!

Heads up, very stream of consciousness so mb if it doesn't make sense. I think I lost the plot but don't feel like proofing rn XD;;
Thought 1 is I am deeply appreciative of when I share my work and all people say is "cool comic! Characters are hot!" It's wonderful and it makes me happy. I usually try and take time to respond to as many of them as I can, but being overwhelmed by life, I'm only able to do that for a couple handfuls in short bursts before I feel like I exhaust my ability to keep it up. That couples with that saying "Hey, thanks!" to everyone who comments starts to feel equally awkward as finding something cool and going "Hey, nice!" because even though I do mean it sincerely, it also feels weird to not be able to individualize every expression of gratefulness. I don't know that it's a matter of it being anti-intellectual, or at least not 100% of the time, I think a lot of us just don't necessarily know how to bridge the gap between wanting our interactions to be authentic while noting that our authenticity just looks like a copy/pasted comment regardless of whether you're the one saying "Hey, nice!" or "Thank you so much!" but for both of those people, those sentiments are real and it sucks to feel like you can't validate those feelings beyond that superficial interaction. Double points if there's anxiety in the mix because now there's the extra layer of "is me saying ____ going to annoy them because they already get a lot of 'hey, nice!/thank you so much!'?" So I think a lot of people are just doing that "And so... they were both bottoms" meme at a conversational level Thought 2 is that as grateful as I am for people sharing their general enthusiasm, I DO spend an inordinate amount of my conceptualizing and writing time trying to imbue my comic with deeper exploration of the topics it tackles. All the social awkwardness and growth, the examination of child maltreatment, political intrigue, and the associated trauma of it all isn't just there for set dressing. I do a lot of research and go (what feels like) great lengths to do justice to the topics I'm writing about. So when someone is able to go "hey, even though I've seen tropes like it in other fiction, it finally clicked for me why friendship doesn't mean I have to be useful to someone at all times because of chapter 7," that does hit haaaaaaaaaaaaaard because it validates all that extra time/effort I put into the thing that often goes by seemingly ignored in service of "Kheil abs" lol. it's not just about that people are enjoying my work, it's that my work is actually doing something more for them than distracting them from their boredom/anxiety. It has, hopefully, given them more tools to navigate their own lives a little easier, and that does matter to me a whole lot. But it's not a *requirement* that people engage with or get that much out of my work. I'm doing that for my own creative fulfillment so that when it hits for the people who need to be hit by it, it hits as hard as it can. That said Thought 3 is that just because someone likes going to the beach and never even go in the water; they just want to sand bathe and nap for a few hours, it doesn't mean that their enjoyment of the beach is somehow less important or legit than the people whose ideal beach day is full on scuba diving and underwater cave exploration. Both of those people are equally valid in their enjoyment. I personally think the insecurity comes from that most people on average like being at the shore throwing a ball around and there are very few people (comparatively) deep diving, so it's very easy for the divers to be resentful that more people don't want to go "deep enough" with them 'cuz it's lonely, and the beach goers to feel weird about being basic and not having a Real™ appreciation for the ocean. I don't know how to close that divide, but I also don't necessarily think it needs to be closed so much as we just need a better cultural awareness of how that divide works so we can have healthier conversations about stuff because as it stands right now what I see is people who have different views simply dismissing contrasting opinions by way of clashing "this means a lot to me and I want to smother it in reverence" vs "stop thinking so hard, it's just a movie about space wizards" and I don't think either end of that spectrum is either the healthiest to be in or more correct than the other. What I dislike is the dismissal of the other.
