because there's no way to define fair use to exclude training datasets that doesn't also kill most or all transformative use defenses.

i don't know what you're referring to as "actual ai" here, sorry. the term's meaning is very loose.

that's basically all donkeywork downstream of "what do i want done and how do I want it accomplished" yeah - compare with say a novel, where the moment to moment particulars of the thing are the entire point, not "sexy whalers and also a metaphor for god ig"

creative expression involves personal idiosyncrasies and subtleties unavailable to the kind of thing the lilim are currently capable of being.

as someone working cross domain in both technical and creative fields, the shortfalls in creative work are glaring, in terms of genuine novel expression. lots of utility for prototyping and exploration, ass in terms of actual cultural artifact production.

the problem, as with programming, is understanding what you want in specific enough detail to describe as a series of things you need.

literally this morning i knocked out a set of scripts to d/l a zendesk doc suite in html, convert it to docusaurus markdown using git for version control, and keep both versions bidirectionally synced. i could have done it manually in a month maybe. this was ready to test when i parked at work.

"we are going to insist that the sky is green until you tell me how the sky being blue is important" seems to be empirically true but is very frustrating to be told

NMT is a transformer- and attention-based technology that's quite similar to LLMs. the differences are in the training corpora and in the substantial accuracy gains for under-resourced languages; I wouldn't say it's just incremental improvements to 2006 tech, personally.

2006 google translate and 2026 google translate are operating at levels different enough that they aren't really comparable, and the 2026 version is absolutely using the same core tech as Gemini.

TIL, absolutely fascinating
February 11, 2026 at 7:26 PM
This is one of the things that marks out folks who use LLMs as a crutch for creation -- they think the *idea* is the important bit and not the *execution* and the technique. Ideas are free. I have more plot and setting things in my files than I'll probably be able to execute in my life.
