Having muscled age-verification through last session, AZ Republicans are pushing forward even greater restrictions on sex, including banning porn entirely (HB 2900), threatening adult producers with warrantless AG inspections (HB 2133) and HB 2720, which would make purchasing sex a felony.

hm yes the state needs to protect the dumbs from themselves possibly by using violence on them
I think that a lot of the socially libertarian consensus of the 2010s was driven by people who had high executive function and were able to manage moderation and whose social circle was similar.
In the future we're gonna look back at online gambling and prediction markets in the same way we look now at cigarettes on airplanes and lead-based paint

The girl says she don't love me
Well that don't bother me
She thinks she got the answer
But I still got the key
One ten on the one oh four
Thinking 'bout her call

Nothing matters at all

there are at least two major doc projects i would simply never attempt as a solo IC that are now within reach simply by automating giant piles of donkeywork (externalizing ui strings, reorganizing for accessibility)
HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW: “.. In our in-progress research, we discovered that AI tools didn’t reduce work, they consistently intensified it.”

When a sitting representative refers to the Super Bowl halftime show as “pornography,” people should use that to reflect on how they and other representatives are simultaneously working to ban, censor, and restrict “pornography” and what that actually means

The US immigrant population generated more in taxes than they received in benefits from all levels of government every year from 1994 to 2023.

The Cato study provides the first-ever 30-year analysis of the fiscal effects of immigration on government budgets.

Spotify's got some brass to be sassing literally anyone else about fucking artists out of money
I dunno, man, if you sue someone for an amount that would make you the third largest country by annual GDP (www.worldometers.info/gdp/gdp-by-c...), you might start to give people the impression you're a bit of a racket and not really serious about the court system

You’re not going to understand everything your dick does. The scripture says its ways are not your ways. This is what faith is all about, trusting when it doesn’t make sense, trusting when your dick takes you out of a blessed place and you come into a storm that looks like it’s going to defeat you.

suggestion for terminology: by analogy with 'daemon' and wordplay with the initialism LLM, using the term 'lilim' for large language models

bonus: gets us away from using the term 'ai', accurately describes them as inhuman entities that can be dangerous if improperly handled

a nice thing about when the internet was a bunch of little sites and servers was that it was a lot harder for governments to pressure "the chat provider everyone uses" to implement age verification.

you wanna pressure 300 separate IRC servers? good luck with that. but one company? easy

To repeat.

--

And to repeat:

The political faction saying we must all have to log legal ID before speaking or accessing speech on the Internet,

and the political faction who believe transgenderism is a dangerous mental contagion that spreads by speech about transgenderism,

are the same faction.
Age verification is deanonymization,
Deanonymization is censorship.

The Supreme Court is now taking away your right to anonymously *read* a form of speech. If speaking can mean that your readers have to subject themselves to potential consequences to read it, how can there be freedom of speech?
NEW: In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court held that age verification for explicit sites is constitutional. The majority said it protects minors without violating free speech; dissenters warned it burdens adults’ rights and ignores First Amendment precedent.

I’m enough of an economist to realize a big issue here, but not enough to eyeball its effect.

Most billionaire wealth is not in cash. To tax those assets down to a few millions, how much will those stock, property, etc., assets crater in price, wiping them out (unredistributively) altogether?
