🚨I am very honored to announce that I’m starting as a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow at the University of Lisbon, funded by the European Commission 🚨. I am grateful to NCSU where I honed my skills in Quaternary Geochronology and all my USA colleagues who I work with in Earthquake Geology. ☺️🌍

The “problem” with vaccines? They so effective at preventing deaths that they create generations of people that question whether disease was a problem in the first place because they have never experienced the horrors of a world without vaccines.

I suspect that there was surficial distributed deformation too, but since I am not aware or knowledgeble about that area, I will wait for further research.

hi, @berndandeweg.bsky.social it was actually a shallow EQ for a subduction zone, so that is not the reason. I'm sure people will elaborate/investigate with data on why it did not produce a large tsunami, but several factors come to play, as the rupture itself and wave propagation mechanisms

The aftershock zone of today’s M8.8 Kamchatka megathrust #earthquake is comparable to the rupture area of the 1952 rupture zone from Macinnes et al. (2010). At a rate of 8 cm/year, the accumulated slip of 6 m since 1952 matches with the preliminary rupture model of today’s earthquake pretty well. 🧪⚒️

Incredible shrinking Cone of Uncertainty! Kartina 2005 vs Helene 2024. Dramatic improvement in hurricane forecasting due to expertise of NOAA scientists at NHC & AOML. Since 2005 forecast error on 5-day track has decreased by ~50%! We often take these accurate forecasts for granted but... 1/

I talked to a NOAA colleague yesterday who told me that 75% of the federal employees of his division have left and he’s worried about their ability to get work done even if Congress funds NOAA at some level. The devastation to science will be felt for generations.

My latest @nature.com story shares the human stories behind the massive job loss and brain drain facing US science.

The quote I still can't get past: "We want to offer scientific asylum to our colleagues,” said Eric Berton, president of Aix-Marseille University in France.

Unemployed researchers face some tough career choices as they flood the job market after the Trump administration’s cuts to science.

Excellent reporting of a tragic story. So many mishaps, not the least of which was the NC legislature’s decision to eliminate a crucial landslide mapping program for 7 years under pressure from real estate interests.

As hurricane season approaches, I want to tell you why I spent the past 4 months reporting this new story about Hurricane Helene.

In 1999, I spent 13 hours in a car on a gridlocked interstate with my 3-week-old baby during the disastrous mass evacuation from Hurricane Floyd.

9 people were killed in a tornado last night in KY. The NWS office responsible for that area has faced some of the most extreme cuts by the Trump administration, including the loss of overnight forecasting.

Last night, they were rushing to find help for the office.

I found the coordinates (approximate) of the solar plant, but it is not making sense just yet, solar plant is quite recent, so we need recent imagery. I agree, it seems like a step-over and we lack more information.
