Not that changing this would necessarily alter immigration politics much if at all, but I suspect that even voters considerably more knowledgeable than the median voter would be shocked at how few immigration restrictions the U.S. has had historically.

Essentially zero for the first century.

Do CBS News executives understand that MAGA will not be in power forever? I genuinely think this is lost on a lot of people. They've gotten scammed by bad actors into believing Trump's 2024 win represented something seismic and even permanent. I predict they'll look back on this as a serious error.

The thing about Iran-Contra and Watergate was that they WEREN’T flagrant: they had to be exposed.Trump literally does stuff five times worse than Watergate every day, and then tweets an openly neo-Nazi meme about it from the official White House account. It’s a difference in kind, not just degree.
