Musician, teacher, occasional writer. She/her preferred; they/them also OK. I’ve used the name “Pennfana” for so long that if you see it somewhere else, it’s probably me. (I’ve never seen anyone else use it.) Probably neurodivergent; definitely Canadian. 🇨🇦
The moment when you realize that you and your best friend got each other the same card for Christmas… 😆

(Bruce, if I had to share a brain with someone, I’m glad I ended up sharing one with you.)

Mum’s birthday today—the fourth without her. It’s still hard, but at least it’s familiar enough that I’m coping better than I did a year or two ago. Still, there are some days when I miss her more than others, and this is one of them.

Today, out of sheer curiosity, I looked up the number of accounts registered with the Archive of Our Own. Apparently there are nearly 9.5 million. Not all are authors, but when I look at that number it kind of astonishes me that of those 9 million, my account is one of the first 1500.

I bought a telescope a few days ago. I’ve always been interested in astronomy, but until recently I haven’t done much about that interest but read. Today I went out to the beach to align the telescope’s finder scope; it took a while, but the weather is nice today. I’m sorely tempted to go swimming.

Jane Goodall? Damn. I knew it would happen someday, of course—after all, she *was* in her nineties—but it’s not exactly the best news I’ve heard today.

May her name be remembered as long as there are people to remember it.

Went swimming out at my favourite beach again today. The water was cold enough that I needed to take a bit of acclimation time before I did any swimming; still, it was lovely, and at a time of the year when good swimming weather is often scarce, I’m grateful I was able to take advantage of it.

I had a couple of errands to run this evening, so I brought a friend.

(Cat not let loose in the car until we got home. Cat also left safely in carrier while I went into the grocery store for a Too Good To Go bag. I don’t need him figuring out how to unlock the car!)

I can't believe I need to have an AI policy! I made it pretty short though: Using AI is cheating, yourself mostly. In addition to the environmental blight created by AI, it makes no sense to use it in your intellectual and creative work. Why would you outsource your innate intelligence?

Graham Greene was one of those actors whose presence was absolutely, 100% guaranteed to make whatever movie or TV show he was in better. He added instant gravitas and authority, reliable stealthy humor and depth beyond whatever was on the page.

Should've been Emmy nominated for "Reservation Dogs."
Graham Greene, ‘Dances With Wolves’ Actor, Dies at 73
The actor’s role as Kicking Bird in the 1990 film ‘Dances with Wolves’ earned him a best supporting actor Oscar nomination.

My mind’s been concocting weird mashups again. This time it’s three songs from the 80s—Caribbean Queen, Billie Jean, and Sweet Dreams. I may have to actually make this one happen, regardless of the difficulty of making the lyrics work together.

It’s not often that I have a favourite beach all to myself (or have the illusion of it). Today is such a day—breezy, a bit cool, with waves on the water that feel playful but hint at the power of this lake. I went for a good swim and now I’m on the shore wrapped in my favourite cloak. Life is good.

I was looking through my phone for a picture of bison to show my best friend’s aunt, who likes them. Finally I did an image search for “fence” and this is what came up. I suppose that it’s not entirely wrong, broadly speaking…

He was very good in person with his trans fans too. Growing up going to SF cons, I met many trans people before I even knew what trans meant. I gave my parents very little they needed to accept in their child, so they had lots left over for everyone else. 😉 www.thepinknews.com/2021/08/06/t...

My watch has apparently counted over 12,000 steps today. (It overestimates the number of flights of stairs I’ve climbed, which is a bit weird, but the step counts generally seem to be fairly accurate.) And I wasn’t wearing it for a bit this morning while it recharged. No wonder my feet are so sore.

Bought myself an Otamatone today. I’ve always wanted to try playing one. On a related note (pun unintended), a weirdly nice thing about being over 40: I can buy silly things and people will assume I’m getting them for kids I don’t have instead of wondering why an adult woman would want such things.
