Delays to emergency care can have devastating impact on pts and their families.

Closure of a large rural ED puts a large number of ABs at risk.

A Virtual ED does NOT = a fully staffed ED.

Unfortunately, there are many more cases like this one...

Sadly the patient developed septic shock and died a couple of days later.

With timely diagnosis and intervention this can be a treatable/survivable surgical condition.

> 12 HOURS after presenting to the closed ED (but w virtual coverage) the xrays showed a massive perforation (hole) in his bowels.

This is a time sensitive condition where pts can become septic and die quickly if not diagnosed and treated rapidly.

The ED was essentially closed, but there was a VIRTUAL doctor that the nurses could call. Because no physician could examine the pt, it was decided to hold the pt overnight for an actual examination and xray.

A middle-aged male presented to a rural ED with acute abdo pain

It was a larger rural ED, and the patient had no idea that it was closed

There was Virtual ED (VED) coverage... but VED cannot assess and treat the sick pts. (Ctas 1 and 2 pts)

Before giving example cases...
Here's a refresher of a recent post on the growing issue across AB:

RURAL ED CLOSURES - REAL AB Case #1
- ABs are not aware of how frequently rural EDs are closed, and the impact on the people in these communities.
- the ever-worsening stats are meaningless
- it's important to put a human face on what's happening.

Anonymized Actual Case #1:

7hrs wait for a pt like this could be life threatening, but sadly is the new norm in our large EDs...

This is the face of Access Block. This could be a matter of life or death for these pts.
pfparks.bsky.social
And these life-threatening wait times will only get worse as we enter the expected high volumes of our fall and winter.

AB "Winter is Coming" and our EDs and hospitals are already woefully overwhelmed.
pfparks.bsky.social
We routinely have NO care spaces to place them and treat them in, and often cannot provide safe and timely care.
But this is NOT unique to pts with Cancer Emergencies... Pts with heart and stroke conditions (as examples) also wait far too long.
pfparks.bsky.social
Handing the triage nurse instructions that rightfully advise the pt should be treated ASAP is like that WR pt with crushing chest pain having ECG changes that show a heart attack:
- the nurse already knows this pt needs care ASAP
- there simply is NOWHERE to put the pts
pfparks.bsky.social
Can confirm: this is indeed a "medical emergency" and the pts should be isolated and treated within minutes.
Can also confirm that Emerg Access in AB is BROKEN and there is NO WAY most EDs can meet these goals.

"Conservative lawmakers are confident the new bill will easily pass in the UCP controlled Legislature, but they may be in for a longer battle than they realize.

According to one source, the other side already has a counter attack waiting in the wings: the number 5,318,008."

Why are my tax dollars subsidizing private schools?

“Stories about dubious contracts are already surfacing in both sectors.”

Sole source contracts w rampant conflicts of interest???

It strikes me that 2 of the most important reasons we even have a Prov Govt is to competently manage Public HC and Public Education...
But it seems like this govt neither cares for nor values these services or the people who work in them.

In fact not only does the UCP not value these services or people, they dismantle the services, while they attack their unions and deride the boots on the ground staff! The workers! Teachers, EAs, nurses, doctors etc.

So much this. They want power without responsibility, and action without accountability. They don’t want to lead, but want to be followed. They’re so unfit for the job, and the consequences will fall on all of us.

Some big bombshells in our new episode with Dr Paul Parks!

Including that Danielle Smith was warned by many experts her healthcare "refocusing" would only make healthcare in Alberta much, much worse!

Not so random posting of a poem I love.

Today the message can be flipped from Albertans back to the teachers.

To the teachers of AB:
“We need you
and your stories
and questions
that like a fresh path
will take us to new vistas.”
