Australia has eased tensions with China, but deeper habits remain. Selective outrage, old alliance reflexes and context-free headlines still shape policy and limit any real reset, writes David Higginbottom.

Friends and frenemies: Australia’s China policy is stuck in a four-tier mindset
Australia’s stabilisation of relations with China is welcome, but the old adversarial mindset remains intact. Institutional biases, selective outrage and context-free media narratives still shape how Australia sees China, limiting any genuine foreign policy reset.

Australia's mainstream media is obsessed with the colour and movement of conflict.

As 'both sides' support #AUKUS, they have failed to investigate whether it might be a huge, wasteful and dangerous dud 'deal'.

Our media rarely 'speak truth to power'.
They parrot power's talking points.

Can the media reporting on news that the US agrees it is “worth continuing” with AUKUS, stop pretending that it’s some sort of big surprise that Trump agrees it’s worth taking our billions of taxpayer dollars for second rate submarines they don’t even have to provide?🙄

Social media replicates traditional mainstream media in this way: the “right-wing” ideology is pure poison and in order to have any real hold in the general population requires billionaires to control and manipulate the information sphere to relentlessly distort, fearmonger and warmonger.
The real question is not "Why is Bluesky so left-coded," the real question is "Why can't the right exist in a social media environment without algorithmic assistance, where people can ignore them"
