My 2026 wishes for cosmology / astronomy:

(1) identifying dark matter
(2) understanding the nature of dark energy
(3) knowing if primordial black holes exist
(4) discovering wormholes that yeet fascists to the other end of the Universe

Look, it’s January 1, gotta shoot my shot

I was going to try to say…something about the year behind us and the year ahead but I couldn’t think of anything better than this post I have thought of often over the past challenging year.
A soft, small, hopeful thing.

What do the colours of astronomical images actually mean? And why can the same object appear very different depending on the telescope we use to look at it?

It’s summer at NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory in Chile! Wildflowers? Blooming. Skies? Clear. Sun? Vibing. ☀️

Heading into what's already looking like a, let's say, challenging 2026, this lovely little piece stands for science too. Do the work. It'll help.
This year we've been told over and over that there are shortcuts to Doing The Work. But there aren't, not really.

Here on the shortest day of the longest year I wrote a little defense of Doing The Work. dansinker.com/posts/2025-1...

A friend has recently just got into #astrophotography and spent 8 hours taking this image of the Rosetta Nebula from Sydney.

It’s soooo neat! Winds from those central hot stars are carving out a cavity in this huge cloud. New stars are forming there too!
