For a better understanding of plant physiological acclimation and evolutionary adaptation, we work to understand (as a model) how plants handle metals in changing or contrasting environments. We are also interested in metal-dependent protein functions.

Our study opens new directions for understanding the molecular basis of extreme trait evolution in land plants 🤓.

Have a read and let us know your thoughts!

🛑 Some 🌱 have the remarkable ability to tolerate and accumulate ☣️ metals.

Below 👇🏼 we present evidence that this trait depends on co-option of the circadian 🕰️ machinery❗

We found that co-option of 🕰️ proteins governs both enhanced and time-dependent expression of metal-accumulation genes❗

So glad to have organized this session "Arabidopsis relatives: a treasure trove for biological discovery" with @plantadaptation.bsky.social. Talks were great, and the venue like no other.
Kudos to #ICAR2025 organizers for a great conference !

Off to the #ICAR2025 Concurrent Sessions! Concurrent 3 in the former Bijloke Abbey refectory on Arabidopsis relatives, started by Polina Novikova from @raphmercier.bsky.social department @mpipz.bsky.social who’s reporting on her research on natural variations of polyploidy in Arabidopsis species.

Diphthamide formation in Arabidopsis requires DPH1-interacting DPH2 for light and oxidative stress resistance (Hongliang Zhang, Nadežda Janina, Koray Ütkür, Thirishika Manivannan, Lei Zhang, Lizhen Wang, Christopher Grefen, Raffael Schaffrath, Ute Krämer) doi.org/10.1093/plph... #PlantScience

Shout-out to @pierredupuy.bsky.social and colleagues!
Excited to share our latest study, where we uncovered a previously unknown bacterial defense system in M. #tuberculosis: effluxosomes — dynamic membrane clusters that coordinate resistance to multiple toxic metals.

Using a new phylogeny of the Brassicaceae (www.cell.com/current-biol... with a ton of papers on glucosinolate occurrence we did a meta analysis across the family authors.elsevier.com/sd/article/S.... Chemical diversity changes quickly and doesn’t track phylogenetic relationships. #secmet
Distribution of key glucosinolates with known causal enzymes across the Brassicaceae. Shows rampant presence absence variation that doesn't track phylogeny closely. Suggests lots of independent events.

Two fantastic positions in #plantscience: A junior AND a senior group leader position at the Gregor Mendel Institute (GMI), part of @viennabiocenter.bsky.social. Generous core funding, fantastic plant and non-plant colleagues, all in a very livable and beautiful city.

Sometimes working in academia feels like playing an elaborated glass bead game.

It became obvious to me during the pandemic when we were asked to implement the numerous rules imposed on organisations and somehow carry on instead of joining forces to contribute solutions to an urgent issue.

So true: "In a very short time, we have created not only silly systems of governance and regulation, but are also managing to subvert academic life through the creation of bullshit jobs and, I would argue, bullshit practices."

Very interesting results: Are we beginning to learn about the mechanisms underlying metal toxicity? Do metal toxicity symptoms arise through an active plant response rather than a passive failure to cope? The door is now open to learning more about the answers to these questions!

As I know him, Xavier again did a fantastic job at presenting his work in the context of the underlying concepts.
