Cardinals get their trademark red plumage from their food. Mostly granivorous, cardinals also eat insects and a wide variety of fruits (wild grapes, dogwood berries, and mulberries.) These fruits contain carotenoids that can create the reds, oranges, yellows, & pinks.

Once limited to the Western US & Mexico. Now found from coast to coast, and southern Canada. In 1939, a few originally captured in California were set free in Long Island by a pet store owner. By the 1940s wild nests began to show up on Long Island, and from there they spread!

🌳 It’s not just about having trees – it’s how they’re arranged.

A study of 6 million Swiss adults found that people living near connected tree cover had lower death rates than those near scattered, fragmented trees.

Weighing in at 2-3g, the Volcano Hummingbird is one of the smallest birds in the world.

Pros: Its short bill can only feed from flowers too small for many other species.
Cons: It takes about 2,700 flowers to meet daily metabolic needs.

While we all saw less people during the COVID-19 pandemic, many saw more birds! 🐦

Those in the Himalayas observed the Kashmir Nutcracker, a lesser-known corvid. Most photographs available today were taken after 2020.

See birders' observations & what we've learned from them at BOW.
