Weirdly enough, I think this works. No one is more insecure than a new ICE agent. They want to be the blonde guy in DHS’s AI Nazi posting so badly. Instead, they’ll be guarding indistinguishable suburban warehouse #16361 while inflated frogs and dinosaurs thrust in their face all day every day.

“Bicyclists should have their own paths and never cause a car to go slow.” I’m all for separated bike paths, but be real: if the bike paths are going to be used in daily life, they will eventually connect to streets that have cars on them, because you can currently drive a car to most destinations!
postcardsbybecky.bsky.social
This cartoon got the usual bike-hate on Facebook. But even the supportive commenters seemed to assume that bicyclists have a right to ride only as long as none of them annoy or inconvenience any drivers, which is really disheartening.

TRANSCRIPT OF CARTOON

This cartoon has four panels.

PANEL 1

A car and a pickup truck are pulled over on the side of an overpass. There’s an exit ramp with white and green stripes going across it, which in some cities indicates pedestrian and bicyclist crossings. The driver of the car, a woman in an orange top, is walking towards the driver of the pickup, who has gotten out of the truck. He's wearing a blue cap and a red tshirt.

WOMAN: Hey there. I see you're pulled over. You need me to call for help?MAN: Thanks. I'm having the worst day ever!

PANEL 2

A closer shot of the truck driver as he rants. His face is framed by two yellow caution signs with bicycle icons and arrows pointing to the green and white crosswalk lines. The concerned woman is behind him.

MAN: I was just driving along and bam! A bike came out of nowhere! No chance for me to see it coming! Stupid bike riders think they own the road!

PANEL 3

Looking worried, the man points to a dent on his truck's front grill.

MAN: I got a big truck so I'd be safe on the road — and see what happens? Just look at this ding on my truck!

PANEL 4

From the ground in front of the truck, a hand comes up, forefinger raised to get attention. The woman is shocked; the man is annoyed.

BIKER (weak shaky voice): Sorry to interrupt but could you call me an ambulance?MAN: Hey! It's not all about you!

CHICKEN FAT WATCH

Chicken fat is obsolete cartoonists' lingo for unimportant but amusing details in the art.

PANEL 2: A highway sign says "Highway to Heck." The font is called "Highway Gothic."(“Highway to heck” is a reference to a Foxtrot comic. “Some songs just weren’t made for Muzak.” “Some ears weren’t, either.”)

PANEL 3: The logo on the front of the truck says "Dodge SLAM."

My new face paints were delivered while I was heading in to work and I feel like:
Three Calvin and Hobbes panels. Calvin is on the bus, at his school desk, and running eagerly off the bus. In each panel, Calvin’s thought balloon shows his smiling face wearing a propellor beanie.

This is part of the process too. Let’s make sure the people who want good things outnumber the people who are stuck in the auto-centric past.

If you like this change to the street, please let Brooklyn CB6 know by emailing [email protected]

I'm on the board and we're already getting some cranky emails. The folks who are using this and benefit from it don't know they have to stand up for good things, so help us stand up for good things.

Some things I've learned in my first few weeks:

1) There is a grey market candy swapping racket between janitors, TSA agents, CSRs, and everyone else who has to stand someplace all day at the airport.

Hi-chews, sour candies, and gummy anything are in highest demand.

What Now: "War Zone"

4 Panel Cartoon

Panel 1: A male reporter in a helmet and khakis addresses the viewer. Behind him two men are enjoying a beer at a table on the sidewalk outside a downtown pub.
Reporter: I come to you live form WAR-TORN PORTLAND!

Panel 2: The reporter interviews a bearded man in a D20 tee shirt, examining his pint of ale.
Reporter: As you can see, people here live on a knife's edge! Sir, how has the war affected you?
D20 Guy: Uh, well, this pale ale is a bit too hoppy. I might get a stout next.

Panel 3: The reporter sticks his microphone at a mom walking down the street with her kids. Behind them are houses and trees. It's a pleasant day.
Reporter: Ma'am, how do you get by day-to-day?
Mom: The city built a new park, so I'm taking the kids to play in the splashpad.

Panel 4: The reporter stands in front of a gated facility, the ICE building, as a group of naked bike riders passes by.
Reporter: A weary city cries out: "Send in the troops!"
Bike riders: Hey hey! Ho ho! ICE and feds have got to go!!!

It's #bannedbooksweek and the book banners who stalk my account for things to screenshot are back on their 'BoOk BaNs ArE a HoAx bullshit, so I dare them to screenshot this thread.

Funny, they try to stir up rage about most any banned book post, but they never shared these, huh, weird, wonder why.

Book banners always seem confused about how we can call something a ban if the books are still available elsewhere.

I'll put this in a way they'll understand.

When your outreach leader was barred from going within 2500 feet of a playground?

Still a ban even though they sell slides on Amazon.
Screenshot from The Guardian with the headline "Moms For Liberty Outreach Leader exposed as registered sex offender."

Phillip Fisher Jr, who served three years in prison, volunteered at Philadelphia summit for rightwing parental rights group

A Philadelphia-based outreach leader for Moms for Liberty – the conservative parental rights group that is pushing to exclude discussion of gender and diversity from school curricula – has been exposed as a registered sex offender.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Phillip Fisher Jr – a pastor and local Republican ward leader who volunteered at Moms for Liberty’s national summit in Philadelphia this year – pleaded guilty in 2012 to a charge of aggravated sexual abuse involving a 14-year-old boy when he was 25 and living in Chicago.

A vintage advertisement on a New York City subway car in the NY Transit Museum. It reads: "MISS SUBWAYS. Like to be Miss Subways? If you're over 17 — live in metropolitan New York — and are not a professional model or entertainer . . . send your picture and a brief letter to: Miss Subways, 630 Fifth Avenue, New York 20, N.Y." with a cartoon of a woman in a patterned dress painting the "MISS SUBWAYS" logo in cursive.

This is the main issue I have with so much of the coverage around e-bikes. It's not that there aren't legitimate issues. But there is a panic around e-bikes and crickets regarding the daily toll of cars. And that's because the harm of cars is just accepted. It's baked into our society.

The deference we give to drivers is astonishing: speeding, blowing through red lights, crashing without a whisper; yet we jump on non-drivers the moment they step out of line.
