Every once in a while I remember that when Vic Mackey from “The Shield” (2002-08) has nowhere left to turn — when he has murdered other cops in cold blood and is guilty of extortion and stealing millions in drug money and the walls are closing in — he escapes punishment by getting a job with ICE.

i think powell's response here is a demonstration of the folly of the idea that democratic accountability requires presidential control. what if the president is not acting in the public interest? you want independent agencies to be able to push back and pursue their *congressional mandate*
Powell, showing more guts than almost any GOP legislators:

"The threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Fed setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the President."

Tolerance is arguably the most fundamental liberal principle and it is too often missing in today's political dialogue.

Today is not the first time fascist and illiberal political movements threatened American politics. But it does seem like this generation of politicians and actors have lost some capacity for tolerance, even when opposing ideologies are broadly pro-democratic.
