"Sullivan also discussed the Biden administration’s response to the Russia-Ukraine war. He said that President Biden’s two priorities were to “make sure that Ukraine does not fall” and to “take every reasonable measure to avoid World War III.”

“In today’s climate, a military parade could offer an opportunity to counter misperceptions about the armed forces. It could bring Americans closer to service members and juice military recruitment—all of which is sorely needed,” @kschake.bsky.social writes:
Sometimes a Parade Is Just a Parade
Not everything the Trump administration does is a threat to democracy.

I just realized I never finished this thought. The dramatic change in domestic politics demands an immediate and clear response, not a mealy-mouthed wishful thinking like "the administration has an opportunity to do a lot of good by resetting foreign policy norms" and other such bullshit

Bill Kristol, of all fucking people, seems like the only Bush neocon who understands that things, at least in terms of domestic politics, have changed dramatically

If you genuinely believe the future is worth fighting for, then we need 1) visions of what a better future looks like and 2) a movement that facilitates climate action at all scales. Both of those require knowing what works (and talking about it!). This is not a bad thing in movement building!

The only solace I can take is that at least the police are protecting Jews instead of attacking them. Compared to Russian and German police actively helping the Black Hundreds and Nazis, that's a massive improvement.

Remember when the mass shooting at a Jewish daycare in LA San Fernando Valley? The Jewish daycare in my neighborhood has paid for armed guards ever since. Sometimes 2 armed guards for larger celebrations

my shul very frequently speaks to security experts and makes changes on their advice, especially regarding the safety of any children in the building.

It's something I thought of while visiting the Amsterdam Jewish Museum. A lot of the visitors were noticeably "switched on" even within the safe confines of the museum. (The door to the entrance leads to stairs and another door. The first door only opens again after you go through the second).

When I first visited Berlin in 2000, I noted the local police with automatic weapons stationed outside guarding the Oranienburger Straße Synagogue. They were not fucking around.

I vividly remember attending a friend’s kid’s bar mitzvah in Virginia just a little after the The Tree of Life synagogue shooting and someone thanking the off duty cops outside—which I did not realize was even a thing before that—and her voice cracking as she did it and people flinching.
