The Oregon Republican Party tried to help Donald Trump make the case for military intervention in Portland with an image of a fiery protest — but since Portland is calm, they had to fabricate one by merging old photos of police in Ecuador and protesters in Brazil www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Former USAID official here.

The current Administration has done zero impact analysis to estimate the effects of its obliteration of USAID on deaths around the world.

It just keeps saying "no one has died" as a mesmeric incantation.

The facts, below. 🧵

The judge also set an initial schedule for pre-trial motions.

The first set is expected by Oct. 12. Per Comey’s defense counsel, that batch will include motions to dismiss for selective and vindictive prosecution, as well as a motion challenging the legality of Halligan’s appointment as US attorney

With an unusually loud bang of his gavel Wednesday, a federal magistrate judge agreed to dismiss charges without prejudice against a Chicago couple found lawfully carrying guns outside an ICE facility.

"Case dismissed."

In many states, there is no automatic voter registration or the option of same day registration. If you want to vote, you have to register typically 30 days out from an election. Special elections pop up at odd times. Thus, registering at 18 is one way that you ensure you are even able to vote. 🗳️

Never understood "voter drives".

Just be worth voting for. Have something to offer. If you have to whine to get people to vote for you, do some soul searching as to why they don't bother.

It’s a sad (and chilling) day when legacy media cannot be trusted to follow even the most basic tenets of journalism.

But when one of the world’s most influential and ubiquitous news sources uses a photo from the 1992 LA uprisings to characterize events in 2025 Portland, we’re at that point

Chilling insight by @barbarafwalter.com: "Once citizens view their own government’s security forces as an occupying army, violence becomes inevitable. Trump’s team knows this… They’re trying to trigger the very unrest that would justify further crackdowns."

via www.nytimes.com/2025/10/07/o...
Screenshot from a NYT article by Thomas Edsall, quoting Barbara Walter of UC-San Diego: "The quickest way to piss people off is to send soldiers into their neighborhoods especially when there’s no reason for them to be there. It’s inherently provocative, and Trump and his team understand this. Research by the political scientist Robert Pape shows that the single most powerful predictor of suicide terrorism is the presence of foreign troops on local soil. People hate, hate, hate that. They hate the humiliation, the powerlessness, the feeling of being occupied.

"Once citizens begin to view their own government’s security forces as an occupying army, violence becomes inevitable. Trump’s team knows this. In fact, that’s the point. They are not trying to restore order; they’re trying to trigger the very unrest that would justify further crackdowns. In the end, violence serves their ultimate end: They want to create the illusion of disorder so they can tighten control and stay in power indefinitely."
