The @nytimes.com and @natecohn.bsky.social shared their readers' ideas for how to stop gerrymandering. The most popular proposal? Proportional representation.

It really truly is. Anybody who looks at countries using first-past-the-post (aka plurality voting) sees a situation worth emulating.

Democracy may be the worst form of government, except all the others that have been tried, but FPTP is the worst form of democracy. We need proportional representation.

The tumultuous times we're facing make it clear that our political system is aging and in sore need of an update.

#ProportionalRepresentation is the highest priority fix.
protectdemocracy.org
Our two-party system creates zero-sum politics, driving gerrymandering and voter disillusionment. Most democracies use proportional representation instead, which encourages coalition-building and better reflects voter priorities.
prorepcoalition.bsky.social
Some people say “If you want to be heard, run for office.”

Cool. But maybe… just maybe… we should also fix a system that ignores most voters.

Start with #ProportionalRepresentation.

More and more people are hearing the message that #ProportionalRepresentation is THE best way to address gerrymandering.

"Proportional representation would make gerrymandering irrelevant. But it would do a lot more than that.

Most importantly, proportional representation would make it far easier for small parties to win representation in the House."

#ProportionalRepresentation would, quite literally, save lives.

It's true. With our current system, everybody gets divided into two camps that loathe each other and fight for majority power to steamroll the other.

In a multi-party system, we'd better respect each other's unique perspectives and come up with compromise solutions.

Changing the voting system to proportional representation will work wonders for non partisan attitude. The first past the post voting system creates polarization, as time passes, it becomes pernicious polarization. The US is now in the pernicious stage, which can lead to civil war.

Remember: If we allow ourselves to fall into fatalism, or wallow in disappointment, or become resigned to what is rather than what should be, we will lose the long game.

The greatest enemy of positive social change is cynicism about what can be changed.

Want climate action? Racial justice? Housing reform?
Then we need a legislature that actually reflects who lives here.
#ProportionalRepresentation isn’t a side issue—it’s *the* issue that unlocks true progress on *all* issues.

Proportional representation ensures every vote counts, giving voice to all - even in divided districts - by transforming how we elect and truly reflecting the people's will.

As you know, the GOP plans to gerrymander Texas to squeeze out 5 more seats and Dems will do the same to California.

But did you know that gerrymandering works by gaming the disproportionality of our winner-take-all system? #ProRep is the obvious fix.

It's really the most important direction for both parties. With the rise of the populist wing, the Republican coalition is also breaking up.
maxberger.bsky.social
The most important direction for the future of the Democratic Party is breaking up the two party doom loop.

There is not a singular ideological agenda or direction that will make a pro-democracy majority. We need a new, proportional representation system that will allow more parties in Congress.
prorepcoalition.bsky.social
Yes, we *can* do better.

The top 10 countries in the 2025 Global Social Progress Index all use proportional representation.

When every vote counts, societies thrive.
Graphic titled “2025 Global Social Progress Index.” Text explains the index measures 57 drivers of social and environmental progress across 170 countries. A ranked list shows the top 10: Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, Iceland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Ireland, and Germany. Next to each country it says “proportional” under the column “Voting system.” At the bottom, text notes “Canada ranks 18.”

Our political system was state-of-the-art at the time, but it's high time we get a system update to #ProportionalRepresentation.

An irony of single-member districts is they were advocated by Founding-era figures precisely because they were a closer approximation of proportionality, more accurate representation, as opposed to plurality multi-member. But that was before the idea of proportional representation had been invented.
