Gaza is being destroyed brick by brick.
Western leaders remain silent as families starve.

But across Canada, Grandmothers Against Genocide, a powerful grassroots movement, is standing up against the darkness.

Gregor Robertson has a fantastic legacy in certain parts of his mayorship.

Housing is very much not one of them.

Who was most responsible for Vancouver's housing rents + prices by 2018?

(a) Fed Minister Diane Finley
(b) Fed Minister Jason Kenney
(c) Prov Minister Rich Coleman
(d) Mayor Gregor Robertson

(Reminder: Vancouver represented only 25% of the population of the Metro Vancouver region in 2018.)

Choosing ex-Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson as housing minister over @beynate.bsky.social might be smart, if only because Robertson saw the front lines of the patient zero of Canada's housing crisis. This is also why picking Robertson is so easy to attack it's almost unbelievable Carney did this.

and yes it was very important to start with a simpsons reference

Gregor Robertson at housing is an epic troll. Full points to Carney for that one. Funny bit.

sometimes i think about when Gregor Robertson defended vancouver’s record on housing and claimed that “our food trucks are globally revered”

for the record when i told people where i was from last year nobody broke down screaming “the food trucks!”

I mean sure.

But also, when Robertson became mayor, the median selling price for an east side home was $600,000.

Today it's $1.8 million.

Folks were angry that working class people couldn't afford to buy in Vancouver anymore, and didn't like that politicians didn't take responsibility.
There is valid criticism of the Vancouver City Council from 2008 to 2018, but it often lacks perspective on the overall context of a left-of-centre City Council w/ a Conservative-run fed & prov government, & regional counterparts who never carried their weight in social housing for the region.
this chart of social housing starts in metro is illustrative of exactly that

In 2018, I asked Gregor Robertson four times if he bore any responsibility for Vancouver's housing crisis after being mayor for a decade.

Four times, he said no.

I wonder if he'll feel any responsibility going forward.

love how people who benefit when when the real estate market is hot get to be experts that say “it’s a buyers market now so why aren’t people buying?!?!?”

because globally everyone is holding on to their cash and locally nobody can afford a $2.7 million home, you muppet
