If you’re an American should watch the Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown ep on Iran. A deeply humanizing look at a country full of people just like you and me. I watched it after Anthony died and it moved in ways that are hard to relay. I also immediately ran out to try kabob koobideh and tahdig.

This OPSEC Special Bulletin went out to the Pentagon during the same time period that SECDEF was using an unauthorized Signal chat.

You can’t make this shit up.

When Elon Musk started recruiting for DOGE in November, he described the work as “tedious” and noted that “compensation is zero.” But WIRED has learned that some DOGE staffers are drawing six-figure salaries from the agencies they’re dismantling.

Some DOGE Staffers Are Drawing Six-Figure Government Salaries
Engineers and executives at the so-called Department of Government Efficiency are drawing healthy taxpayer-funded salaries—sometimes from the very agencies they are cutting.

This list is so long and taking up so much real estate in his speech it’s almost like they want to distract from their massive cuts to Medicaid

I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F.

18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it.

We made this website to tell our story:

People in tech talk about the idea of a “10x programmer” — someone whose work is worth that of 10 others. I get the impression Musk etc think they can apply it all over the federal workforce but like… there’s no such thing as a 10x ATC navigational aid maintenance worker. Some jobs just need people.
Abruptly firing people who work in air traffic control is like murdering your own soldiers in the middle of a war.

Even if you think things now aren’t working as efficiently as they should there’s no clear path to recovering from this; it’s just a really extremely foolish and dangerous thing to do.
On the heels of multiple airplane disasters, including one less than a month ago that killed 67 people, and after years of warnings about our understaffed air traffic control system, Trump has begun firing hundreds of FAA air traffic control workers.

NOAA is reportedly on the DOGE chopping block.

The National Weather Service, which is part of NOAA, provides life saving weather forecasting in the US.

A study found that for every $1 invested in NWS, it produces $73 in value to Americans.

Again, this isn't about efficiency.

This is what it looks like when you lose a massive spacecraft on its way to orbit right over the Caribbean. Lots of commercial flights turning/holding/diverting to avoid falling debris from SpaceX's Starship.

Lots of flights deviating around Israel / Gaza, plenty of flights still into LLBG for now. All departing or arriving to the north, always interesting in these situations as ATC may have to come up routes on the fly. Depends on what departures / arrivals already exist.

Just installed a dash cam in my new EV, what’s annoying is that the car already has front and rear cameras, would be great to just have an SD card slot and they could function as built in dashcams

Discovered this morning that Burning Man has its own airport (88NV) they setup temporarily for a few weeks in the desert. Even has an operating ATCT, which I’m assuming is contract. Interesting reading: airport.burningman.org

Excellent story
What an amazing research (and mystery) story. Even though this pedestrian bridge was built in 1959, figuring out why feels almost more like archaeology than history.

Says a lot about how projects are built: politicians decide, compliance follows.

A great story I won't spoil!

If you’re flying VFR and going cross county please get flight following, ESPECIALLY if you are high, being above the bravo doesn’t mean you are clear of major arrival / departure corridors. Had an aircraft get an RA in this exact situation. Get FF services and we will keep everyone safe

Always excellent threads here about current nuclear energy events
Here's a thread on the Fukushima waste water release and why it really is OK. First, my bonafides. I joined the US Navy as an Electrician's Mate - Nuclear in '01. Served 6 years. I went into civilian nuclear in '08. I am a former Senior Reactor Operator (SRO), current SRO instructor. 1/
