Ah, yes, the early 1940s, when there was peace and prosperity around the globe
With new levies on major nations and selected product sectors, President Trump has lifted the average tax on imported goods from just above 2 percent in January to around 15 percent, the highest mark since the early 1940s, according to experts.
Months of Trump’s tariffs are shifting supply chains and diplomatic ties
The Trump administration’s tariffs are causing a significant shift in supply chains and diplomacy, with major U.S. corporations and trading partners scrambling to cope with the new rules.

Today, April 2, President Trump added another 34% tariff on imports from China.

This is in addition to the 10% on February 4, the 10% on March 4, and the substantial increase during Trump 1.0.

Starting April 5, the average US tariff on imports from China will be 76%.

This is important. Congress needs to exert its authority in order to prevent a massive tax increase that will raise prices for Americans.

The mercantilism, which will continue until morale improves, is bad economics, bad history, & bad politics, & Joe Biden should never have listened to the awful advice he got from Jake Sullivan, Katherine Tai, & company these last four years:
Joe Biden got & followed incredibly bad advice from his most senior advisers on trade, who have built their views about it around lazy caricatures of history & policy that never actually existed, & incorrect beliefs that the economics & politics of trade have fundamentally changed after centuries.
👇🎯 Periodic reminder that no one actually knows what "neoliberalism" is, & if they think they do - like Jake Sullivan - it is usually because they believe in lazy caricatures of history & policy that never actually existed & no one really believed.

Donald Trump claims the heavy tariffs he plans to impose during his second term are "going to make us rich," at no cost to American businesses or consumers.

That is a dangerous fantasy.
Trump, the self-described 'tariff man,' does not understand how tariffs work
Since the president-elect refuses to admit that levies on imports are taxes paid by Americans, he sees no downside to raising them.
