This is Magnus. He just beat cancer. His family wrote the big news on their car and bought him balloons to celebrate. Magnus got so much love from strangers the whole way home. His human said, "I hope everyone has a Magnus in their lives, who shows them what determination and strength are." 14/10

When no one wanted to know about AIDS, when the government didn't care about the death of so many gay men, when everyone wanted to look away, this was the energy Elizabeth Taylor brought for real. She *meant* it. It's a beautiful thing, this energy.

Winter arrived with a bang yesterday and this morning we woke to 11-12 inches of fluffy snow. Shoveling is all done, and we're getting ready for next week's deep freeze (single digits tomorrow night). It's been a little late this year, but it's sure pretty!

We spent Thanksgiving eve cutting up a large dead pine tree that came down in heavy winds. Minimal damage, but we needed to get if off of the bike path it blocked. Got some help from village DPW (came w/chainsaws & took the heavy stuff). Not what 2 60/70-yr olds had planned for in today’s snow!

Sign one is old #200: "Whip It" by Devo is playing on the grocery Muzak in suburban WI this morning, and you remember when they were playing live at the club in downtown Kent OH on Halloween (2nd year of grad school)...

Is there a more engaging Baroque conductor than Nicholas McGegan? He just led Milwaukee Symphony in Handel's "Messiah" (a work I know in my sleep), & it was one of the most enjoyable concerts I've attended in a long while. And the soloists were terrific (especially countertenor Key'mon Murrah).

We're watching the new K. Burns program-quite well done & features a bit less melancholy violin. Tonight's penultimate episode included an excellent (& horrifying) section on what patriot troops did to native settlements in upstate NY. A reminder that Manifest Destiny was a big part of all of this.

One of the joys of retiring from academia is never reading the CHE again. Seems that they are opining on the current AMS brouhaha, but it's behind a paywall and so I don't have to read it. I DO love the graphic, though (as a cellist/gambist, the C-clefs are especially fun to see)!
Why a Musicology Society’s Members Are in Revolt
The leading organization for music scholars is facing an uproar from hundreds of members, who are threatening a boycott unless it meets a chorus of demands.

Clifford “Buzz” Grambo, a Navy veteran, patrols the streets of Baltimore to keep his neighbors safe.

His goal is straightforward: He wants to make ICE agents uncomfortable.

I wish we lived in a land where if journalists heard the president call one of their colleges "piggy" or suggest another of their colleagues, who was butchered for what he wrote, in some way had it coming, they would close their laptops, leave as soon as possible, and ask to be reassigned.

Heard a really lovely, nuanced & well-shaped performance of the Grieg piano concerto this afternoon. We were reminded what a lovely work it is & that, though often viewed as a "war horse" it was nice to listen with new ears (yes, have played it many times). Paul Lewis was the fine soloist.

We were cloudy last night and missed the bright colors everyone else in the state saw. But things are picking up tonight, so maybe we'll get even more color as the evening moves along.

Too cloudy to see the auroras at this point, but we're told the clouds will blow out of here soon, so maybe we'll get lucky. In the meantime, here's a picture from October 2024 (front deck, southern Wisconsin):
