Sometimes we talk about how a certain 2020s talking point would baffle a normal person in the 1980s, like "all my apes gone" or "AOC Donkey Kong Livestream for Trans Rights".

But I think THIS book would baffle a normal under 40 person today.

Ireland has a different rail gauge from the rest of Europe a strategy which has successfully prevented the invasion of Ireland via Rail for almost 200 years.
#Finland will begin to #Russia - proof its rail network, integrate with EU train infrastructure.

The Finnish government has announced the conversion of its rail network from Russian gauge (1,524 mm) to European standard (1,435 mm).

@rebeccanineill.bsky.social you agree, surely?
It has to be named after Maureen Sweeney, the Irish meteorologist who gave the Allies a critical weather report before D Day.

Irish aviation history and meteorological history are intimately linked, and we're a Republic - we don't name things after Taoisigh here (except in Cork).

As everyone should know by now, the anti-trans rhetoric isn’t about “protecting women” in bathrooms or sports … but about removing trans people from public life. And it’s working. This is a big company, making a big change that isn’t about protecting anyone (except men from having to see tampons).
"at Meta’s offices in Silicon Valley, Texas and New York, facilities managers were instructed to remove tampons from men’s bathrooms, which the company had provided for nonbinary and transgender employees who use the men’s room and who may have required sanitary pads" www.nytimes.com/2025/01/10/t...

The thing about Elon Musk to me is that there just doesn't seem to be anything to him, all the memes he posts are stolen, he pays someone else to play games for him, he makes surface level references to media that he probably hasn't seen (NERV), it's all affectation of a personality he doens't have.
endlessly funny to me that of all the things elon musk can buy the one thing he cannot buy and will never be able to do is write a good post on a microblogging website

I am disgusted.
If nothing else, I hope someone sets up a decent alternative, too. But this is crawly behaviour.
Irish Times' announcement that it'll charge 100 euro for a RIP.ie death notice service whose marginal cost is, what, .25 cent?

Price-gouging an effective monopoly service used by people who've literally just been bereaved - this is why we have competition law.

Expect better, people!
