"What if one of YOUR favorite politicians/celebrities/etc is on the list?" Did you all not notice how quickly we dropped Neil Gaiman when we found out about the things he did? Do you know how beloved that guy used to be and how loathed he is now? I think that right there should answer your question.

I am actually increasingly pissed off at a panel I'm watching for a panel about Smart Tech at work.
4 people on the panel. Global audience.
4 white guys.
Right.....

This is a harrowing piece, but what I loved was that the journalist who 'used' this child as a focus for the original piece stayed a major part of his life and never gave up on him.
They could have walked away. They never did.

When I met Craig he was 13 and homeless. I still thought his life might turn around. I was tragically wrong
The long read: I knew he was running away from something. It wasn’t until many years later that I discovered the truth

I score, at most, 1. (Number 9....though I suspect I tried it at least once in my room)
I have never done (9) (it's anti-social), (13) (Blockbuster never operated in my country), or (20) (those things were *expensive*).

I am teh oldz.

My favourite Hiberno-English-ism isn't any of the obvious ones, it's the fact that when we say "sallow" we mean the opposite of what everyone else means. It's not sickly yellow, it's healthy, positive

dag nab it - not only did I get no lunch today I got back to this email "after we recently spoke, I passed on the information to executive management and what can I say - you are practically being showered with praise"
-> "Well done! The message "Positive Feedback" was part of a training simulation"

9a. Realising there is a difference between " If you can write a thousand words a day" and " If you can write a thousand words in a day". Being able to repeat it daily for 60 days is a whole other skill.
9. If you can write a thousand words a day, you can write a 60,000 word first draft in two months.

10. Whatever the field of endeavour - gardening, writing, PowerPoint, Gaeilge, cooking - if a list of advice is mostly "don'ts", it's shit.

11. Righty tighty, lefty loosey.

Success is Preparation+Opportunity+Luck. And the greatest of these is Luck. Without luck you can have all the other two in the world and go nowhere.
You can even gain success with "just" opportunity+luck.
Opportunity is often based on privilege of some shape and can be replaced by 'Luck'
'Luck' often comes up in How I Got Published stories. In a non-writing white male success story I recently saw luck defined as preparation+opportunity. My immediate reaction was 'yes, we all have to do the work but opportunity isn't equally distributed'. This is exactly the sort of thing I mean.
The flip side of this is the male author who was asked about his writing routine, and who talked about how much he loved the feeling that he could close his door and then “the day is completely yours” to focus on writing. He had, at the time, two young children… and, of course, a wife

The BBC and The Times have decided to resurrect the victimhood of Clanchy. But the facts are the facts: Clanchy wrote her racist, Islamophobic, ableist, and Anti-LGBT thoughts for all to see, and when challenged attempted to deny it. (See full 🧵).

I see the 2021 scandal around Kate Clanchy's book "Some Kids I Taught and What They Taught Me" is back in the news as Clanchy receives an apology from the publisher of that book. Here's a reminder of the racism, Islamophobia, anti-LGBT comments, and fat shaming from the book.

I cannot recommend this series highly enough. Heart of Stone is the first novel, but there is so much more in this wonderful world, and I'm so glad they are being released again. Buy this book, and the one after it, and the one after that...

It was just over 20 years ago now that I did the tour of my house and decided to put in a bid. Between a slow process and an upcoming holiday it took til after the new year before it was all finalised.
Kids from the area I first met are ALL GROWN UP. They are 26-40 now. They have kids. It's so weird
