Reporter's notebook: I actually began working on this story shortly after footage of the incident showed up last month.

But by the time I finally got ahold of folks, the story grew: 2 *other* faith leaders I spoke with *also* reported being shot w/pepper balls while protesting this ICE facility.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

It is not possible to guarantee safety for a minority group except through a multicultural society. This is a basic fact of hard reality. Wise up, Steve.

The Manchester synagogue attack is a story of mass immigration and multiculturalism. We must bring an end to both.

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

"This is clearly the mask-off phase of Trump 2.0.

Trump is past triangulation. He’s past argumentation and persuasion. He’s in the raw-power business now. Pam Bondi went to Congress yesterday to let them know."

"15 years ago, Polish workers came here to find opportunity. Now Poland is growing twice as fast as we are," says Kemi Badenoch.

Any ideas what may have happened in the interim?

Pavel and I will probably understand this better than some other commentators due to our background but there is actually fundamentally no difference in what neuron fires when someone shits on minoritised languages and when someone shits on immigrants just because the former are native.

Eh, it wasn’t funny when he shat on Gaelic then, and I don’t think it’s entirely unrelated.

Yes, exactly! I read it through for the first time before writing this column, and it's better and more pertinent than I'd dared to hope (with a few dated passages).

Be pastoral. Get to know them as people, and their families and circumstances, and their worries. Go to the pub, or, better yet, the social club. You'll also meet them at funerals, and sometimes weddings, and at school. Learn their names, and introduce yourself. Don't be a dick.

feels like yet again time to mention that the *videogames* industry (that's a creative industry, which people do creative degrees in) brings in more than twice the amount to the British economy as the fishing and steel industries *combined*

I cannot understand what these people think the purpose of human life is?

It is *not* "pursue joy, deal justly, love well, try to understand as much and see as much of this beautiful world and of the deepness, richness and variety of human culture and experience as you can before you die"?

Been to the youngest’s harvest assembly.
Theory: every primary school built pre about 1980 in Britain has some version of this equipment. It is referred to as something like ‘the apparatus’.
No one has any memory of it ever being used.

Calling English a 'rip-off degree' is one of the most blatant exhibitions of personal barbarism I've ever seen. You've demonstrated nothing but the poverty of your own mind.

Dad’s books are full of empathy, common sense, and a healthy suspicion of the powerful. But at its heart his work is also about how systems keep people poor while pretending it’s their own fault. So I hope Kemi’s taking notes as well as reading the jokes.

This is a lie.

There are many criticisms you might sensibly and truthfully make of the Sentencing Council and the Sentencing Guidelines. I’ve been making them for years.

But this is an outright lie. Pure fabrication. A fraud on the public.

Robert Jenrick is another person who has cooked his brain on Twitter (“Activist judges” is a very American-brained phrase, and I’m also sceptical that 30 judges and mags are really in favour of “open borders”, as opposed to a slightly more liberal regime, or just helping immigrants get their rights)
colinmurray.bsky.social
More in the breathless, breaking stop-the-presses, and not at all confected story, that judges, before they were judges, were involved in practising law. Take 5 seconds to appreciate just how hard into "swivel-eyed loon" Robert Jenrick is being allowed to lean:

The phrase “I only believe what I see” isn’t true either. Most people believe what they want. No matter what they see.
