First, they said postponed; now the meeting is canceled. That means no flu shots next year.

“'It’s a six-month production cycle,' Dr. Offit said. 'So one can only assume that we’re not picking flu strains this year.'"

Fundamentally, that's a form of mass murder.

F.D.A. Cancels Meeting of Vaccine Experts Scheduled to Advise on Flu Shots
The cancellation plays into fears among scientists who worry that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will use his position as health secretary to sow doubts about vaccines.

If you’re in the US and you’d like to know what projects and vital services federal grants currently fund in your state, you can search here: www.usaspending.gov

And you can find the contact information for your elected representatives here: www.usa.gov/elected-offi...

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.

“Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.
White House pauses all federal grants, sparking confusion
The Trump administration has put a hold on all federal financial grants and loans, affecting tens of billions of dollars in payments.

tfw you bring a book to the queer bar on NYE (just in case) but the line is so long that you finish the book before you even enter the bar

(i have two modes: reading at a breakneck pace, and not touching a book for months; i read only 12 books in 2024)

(happy new year)

Really don’t care for this cautious, both-sides “but advocates say” framing. As the article acknowledges, research shows that housing shortages drive homelessness, and throwing poor people in jail doesn’t build more houses. It’s a disservice to your readers to soften a policy’s failures like this.

100-plus cities in the U.S. banned homeless camping this year. But will it work?

I read this essay, "Against Cop Shit," in 2020, and it's one of the pieces of writing that has had the largest influence on my thinking about how I teach out of almost anything. It's very short - if you haven't read it, please do.

This was such a good movie. I laughed so hard that I kept getting looks from the other people in the theater, and I cried quite a bit too. Even for me, someone who's never lived in China, the social commentary was extremely on-point. And the ending was very well done.

A Trump-appointed judge just struck down a Biden rule expanding overtime pay to 4 million working people.

It's really surprising how little media coverage this has received. Trump faced no real questions about this issue during the campaign. 1/
