I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

The Brattle is going to be showing SINNERS in mid-October!

that sounds good! Wherever my aunt & uncle ordered them from did not do that! I live in Massachusetts so I didn’t have continuous access.

“your choice of meat” is maybe a little broad, IME it must contain at least two and one should be corned beef

I love that sandwich. My aunt & uncle used to get platters of them for parties.

I could tell it was something like a ditch but maybe filled with undergrowth?

huh. I only ever heard of them from Brit kidlit, I guess they weren’t uncommon on country estates?

the only reason I knew about the free breakfast program as a teen was that I read old Doonesbury collections

really really glad my bathroom still has original plaster walls given how inadequate the vent fan is

Eh, nothing a little skim coat can’t mend

(I’m used to living in ~100 year old houses, I no longer expect floors to be level or ANY angle to be truly square. I still like plaster better)

yeah it actually makes TERRIBLE walls compared to plaster & lath. Wallboard goes moldy in a way plaster doesn’t and it has comparatively awful acoustics too. one benefit, it doesn’t block wifi like plaster does.

and I could see the tuck and roll upholstery, and it’s the same car that’s in “Whatever Happened To Saturday Night” from Rocky Horror (yeah, my brain does stuff like that)

The people saying "this will never happen" are explicitly imagining it as a set up like US Civil War 2.0, with secession and two opposing armies led by generals.

That is unlikely to be what it looks like.

I just heard a very familiar intro riff (thanks Neil Young)

My statement is simply this: they're using deadly force on unarmed, peaceful civilians. At some point they're going to kill someone on camera, and I do not know that we can control what will happen after that.

Reminder from your resident high school lubrarian: if you plan to do a Banned Books Week display and programming, prioritize living marginalized authors. Use this time to help those who need it the most.

the heck, No Particular Place to Go came out in 1964, for some reason I always thought of it as earlier and the car as a big ‘50s tailfins monster

also I think seat belts were an *option* in American cars for a while, and imports like the VW may have had different standards (the design of a ‘61 hadn’t changed much in 15-25 years!)

lol, my first car was an ‘81 Chevette that DID have seat belts but also barely had a floor! My dad helped me patch the holes with plywood.
