On January 3, 2026, the United States carried out Operation Absolute Resolve, capturing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. They were then transported to a high security facility in New York. President Maduro awaits trial for allegedly leading a major drug trafficking ring. The trafficking of deadly, illegal drugs is a scourge on communities across our commonwealth. Drug overdoses claim the lives of nearly 5,000 Pennsylvanians every year. Cartels do incredible harm to the American people daily, and addiction wreaks havoc on American families. I’ve been clear that I support all necessary measures to crush the cartels and disrupt the flow of deadly drugs. Maduro had to go. He was corrupt, he used violence as a tool of repression, and he stole a democratic election. His evil culminated in the chaos at our southwest border. The United States, the Western Hemisphere, and Venezuela are better today because Maduro is no longer in power. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Venezuela to chart a new path for a brighter future. Once again, the American military demonstrated that our strength and skill are unmatched on the world stage. The brave men and women who took part in Operation Absolute Resolve deserve our thanks and admiration. On January 14, 2026, I voted in support of a War Powers resolution that would have blocked the use of U.S. armed forces to engage in hostilities within or against Venezuela, unless authorized by Congress. This resolution was ultimately blocked by Republicans and Vice President Vance, who broke the 50-50 Senate tie. I continue to believe that if our sons and daughters are sent into a foreign country to engage in hostilities, it is paramount that Congress makes this decision, not the president.
