Trump loves his visuals instilling fear. White costumes make this public aggression more obvious (you are use such crazy force to attack that?). It also makes light of it, something Trump hates. Maybe makes those videos unusable by him.

Many Portland demonstrators have been wearing costumes to good effect.

Like the French Gilet Jaune/Yellow Vest movement, everyone can participate at low cost. Any white hat and a large white T-shirt thrown over what you are wearing works.

White hats, with the overtly stated purpose of defending the constitution (rule of law: due process, separation of powers, states rights, freedom of speech) are a nice clear nonpartisan (?) thing to rally around.

It’s of note that during tonight’s hearing the DoJ didn’t even try to make the case that changing conditions on the ground in Portland warranted the CA National Guard. Instead they relied on legal technicalities. Proving again that what they say in court is different than lies they tell the public.
