I've been thinking a lot about how the US has three founding and how, after Trump, we will — for good or ill — experience a Fourth Founding. I've been thinking about what ideas should be included in a Fourth Founding for the US.
protecttruth.bsky.social
yes, Rawls was very much not around for the Founding.

But the First Founding (Constitution), Second Founding (Reconstruction Amendments), and Third Founding (Civil Rights Act et seq), were all built on Rawls' ideas, that equality of opportunity, law, and rights is the core American goal.

Where are you getting the 17x number? I'm not saying you're wrong, I just haven't seen that figure before and I'm curious.

Doing something like this should result in immediate suspension and possibly permanent revocation of the driver's license.

An adult driver angry at a child they hit with their car.

Our car culture summed up in one video.

Police in Airdrie, Alberta (just north of Calgary) say this driver hit a 17-year-old girl in a marked crosswalk, got out of the vehicle, and appeared to get upset at the teenager before driving away.

They released this video and are now trying to identify the driver.

“No Kings” is a great rallying cry against Trump but applies with equal force to John Roberts and his merry band of Neo-Confederate freaks

It is the *abdication of responsibility and accountability* and even predictability.

IBM, when it warned about making a machine a manager.

All of these things exist only in the imaginations of Trump, his aides, and his supporters. They are no less fictitious than sasquatch or unicorns. This is the end point of millions Americans burying themselves in the hyper-reality of Fox News, Alex Jones, Joe Rogan, etc. for decades.

We are truly living in the age of hyperreal simulacra. There was no crisis at the border or mass influx of immigrants just like there is no sudden crisis of crime and disorder in Chicago, Portland, or any of the other American cities Trump is sending troops into.

Trump: "If we didn't win this election. If we had these people that were running that were ruining our country, destroying our country with their open borders and men playing in women's sports and transgender from everybody and windmills all over the place ... I'm not sure we'd even have a country."

Car dependence is great for car companies' bottom lines, but terrible for drivers. When everyone has to drive a car everywhere, the roads are constantly congested and miserable. Driving in walkable places with good transit is actually more enjoyable than driving in car dependant places.

The US Government is attempting to disintegrate the right to peaceably assemble. It’s the first amendment for a reason.

Very similar vibes to the period between media declaring Biden the winner in November, 2020 and J6.

I wonder if Musk's backers really believed his bullshit or if they realized he was lying or delusional and just thought the price was worth paying to turn Twitter into a rightwing cesspool and propaganda channel.

idly speculating how many troops you'd actually need to forcibly subdue a place the size of Illinois. like 400,000? at least?

This evening, President Trump is ordering 400 members of the Texas National Guard for deployments to Illinois, Oregon, and other locations within the United States. No officials from the federal government called me directly to discuss or coordinate.

always have to plug my syncretic brand of socialism, antitrust good, welfare good, state ownership good, cooperatives good, unions good, etc etc

ngl my opinion of the antimonopoly movement, which I'm generally vaguely supportive of, has gone down lately. Lina Khan endorsing a "private sector DOGE", a lot of stupid opposition on stuff like housing...credibility does sort of matter for this kind of thing and idk man, they're giving me pause

you have to admire the political genius of pointlessly delaying the seating of a progressive from a swing state border district so she has more time to do national media hits calling you pedophile enablers

Q: When you are sworn in, do you intend to sign the discharge petition that would force a vote on the release of the Epstein files?

Rep. elect Grijalva: Yes, I do. I would be 218. These files are the only thing that is different in me getting sworn in versus Reps Walkinshaw, Patronis, or Fine

For a fifth time, Democrats and Sen. Rand Paul R-KY have used a filibuster to block action on a House-passed temporary funding bill. The government shutdown continues.

I agree, but I also think this is a case of every accusation being a projection. Trump is a little piss pants who spent his entire life terrified to walk around his own city. Trump erroneously thinks everyone else — particularly everyone with money — is as big a chickenshit as he is.

ICE is using *thousands* of DEA, FBI, ATF, even IRS agents. Talk about opening the door to drug kingpins, bank robbers, white-collar criminals, and tax cheats.

If there’s a major terrorist attack in the country in the next three years, this will be part of the explanation.

Again, with a completely hostile media environment, over half of Americans have come to see the truth about what Israel is doing in Gaza. It's genuinely quite remarkable.
matthewdownhour.bsky.social
Between Weiss and Ellison it certainly feels like the media environment is going to continue its drift away from popular opinion on the question of Israel/Palestine

Unlike Donald Trump, Powell has a deep and nuanced understanding of the US economy. He knows that he needs to keep his powder dry for the moment investors realize AI can't possibly provide the kind of returns it needs to and tech companies have been promising.
