Question at the Ward 9 forum: How will you support the indigenous community?
Dan Orban: I find the Native community to be fun.
Jason Chavez: Land Back!
roberthaider.bsky.social
Say what you will about Ken Martin, but in my experience he went out of his way to stay neutral, and he earned a lot of credibility from that. Carlbom and his DFL couldn’t be any further from that approach. Doesn’t seem great.

Ummmmm fucking hello??? Conflict of interest? @dfl.org does anyone there even care about the implications of this??
The investigation is being conducted by a panel subcommittee of the CRBC led by Latonya Reeves. Reeves is the author of one of the original challenges to the Minneapolis DFL convention, calling for the revocation of Sen. Fateh's endorsement. Reeves later withdrew her challenge, choosing instead to participate and vote on the CRBC ruling which retracted Sen Fateh's endorsement. Along several other members of the CRBC, Reeves is also a voting member of the DFL State Executive Committee, which absolved the CRBC of error in their handling of the challenges to the Minneapolis DFL convention,

IIRC, she had to “look into this more” before she could support it.

The thing about the mayor’s core base of support being suburbanite/out-of-state property owners and landlords is that they don’t vote here.

Betraying local entrepreneurs and small biz owners and their workers with a veto one month before Election Day… boy, I don’t know.
thatbaba.bsky.social
I shouldn’t be surprised, but as someone who had an office in my neighborhood and had it sold from one out of state landlord to another without any notice, which forced me out due to an immediate rent increase, I can not BELIEVE Frey vetoed a bill that would help local biz owners possibly avoid that

There are so many possibilities for safer, better lives when a city has a strong leader with vision and courage to try. Minneapolis . . . does not have that. But we can in just over a month.

"The main objective of these changes is to make it safer for children to walk to school by limiting car traffic. “We want Paris to regain streets where it is possible to let go of a child's hand,” said Patrick Bloche (PS), deputy mayor, at the Fête des rues aux écoles (Street Festival at Schools)."

Paris celebrated the opening of its 300th “school street”: landscaped & pedestrianized or semi-pedestrianized blocks situated in front of schools. Most have been completed since 2020.

While Trump's DOJ sues us over our separation ordinance and an ICE official emails the Chief thanking him for his cooperation, @jchavezmpls.bsky.social, @aurinmpls.bsky.social, and @aishaforward10.com are doing the work to make our separation ordinance even stronger to protect immigrant neighbors.
startribune.com
The suit, which names Minnesota, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Hennepin County and top state officials, targets a number of local ordinances. Some of the policies limit what data can be shared with federal immigration agents and when police can ask about a person’s immigration status.
Justice Department sues Minnesota over immigrant sanctuary policies
The federal lawsuit follows similar actions taken by the Department of Justice in six other jurisdictions.

For 7 years, Mayor Frey has lied. He lied about no-knock warrants and Amir Locke died. He lied and said there were only 27 unhoused people in the city—facts prove him wrong. He even vetoed the Uber/Lyft wage bill after vowing to support it. Minneapolis needs a leader, not a liar.

In my time working for the Council, a lot of things have surprised me about how city government operates. None more so than the fact that Council allocates millions of programmatic dollars, and the mayor just chooses to not spend those dollars to implement those programs. It’s wild!
jchavezmpls.bsky.social
Sadly it’s not just Donald Trump who does this.

Mayor Frey has repeatedly disregarded budget allocations made by the Minneapolis City Council.
thatbaba.bsky.social
If the President doesn't have to abide by the spending allocations of Congress, then why worry about a budget at all? No matter what they put in it, SCOTUS has now said he can unilaterally change it.

Our Commercial Property Sale ordinance passed at yesterday’s council meeting!

My office had been hearing from businesses, tenants, and residents about the need to address gentrification, ownership opportunities and transparency when it comes to the sale of commercial properties. 1/

Hmm, maybe! The timeline on the County's project website shows that they will seek layout approval from gov't agencies in fall 2025; and Public Works told Council they're bringing forward for approval this fall, so it's been my understanding they do need it. I have a couple emails out to confirm.

I'm glad to see both the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committees recommend that Council withhold municipal consent until the design restores dedicated, separated spaces for bikes/peds.

Here’s some information on the MMU, which has been operational for about a month. It was paid for with about $1 million in national opioid settlement dollars. (Thank you, Attorney General Ellison, for your work on that!)

The Mobile Medical Unit is an incredible resource for the City. After the administration told CMs yesterday that there are no plans to deploy the MMU to the area, it’s worth noting this passage from Mayor Frey’s press release after the shooting.

Excerpt from a press release with the following passage highlighted in yellow: “Our Mobile Medical Unit will continue to go out daily, providing healthcare and opioid resources.”
roberthaider.bsky.social
And yet, they have no plans to bring the Mobile Medical Unit, which could actually help residents, to the area. bsky.app/profile/jcha...
jchavezmpls.bsky.social
I just met with the Mayor’s Administration and asked about the deployment of the Mobile Medical Unit to the Longfellow neighborhood.

I will summarize what was a succinct conversation. There is no plan in the near future to bring this service to our unsheltered residents currently here. 1/

"Evictions and fences are not strategies. They are not solutions. They ignore the humanity and needs of unhoused residents. Trying the same short-term tactics over and over and expecting different results shows just how unprepared City leadership is..."

We were there tonight with our two year old and when all the other electeds and candidates were speaking, the kid was just running around being a two year old. But when Davis was speaking, the kid was locked in and paying close attention. It was pretty remarkable.

fiery speech from dewayne davis addressing dinner du nord, looking at photos of who was at the table and not recognizing the mayor’s friends from when he goes to the food shelf, contrasted with the encampments and shootings, who is being invited to the table?

statement from councilmember jason chavez with concrete steps on what needs to happen to deal with the issues of homelessness and gun violence in minneapolis

@jchavezmpls.bsky.social
We have seen a pattern under this administration when it comes to helping our unhoused neighbors. An encampment is formed, violence occurs, the encampment is removed, and the unhoused residents move to another location due to the fact there are insufficient shelter beds available. This is not a solution and it’s not sustainable.

Here’s what needs to happen:

A commitment by the Mayor to work with the City Council to help establish a Navigation Center, which is a government-sponsored center with both social services and beds meant to address unsheltered homelessness.
An immediate deployment and consistent presence of violence interrupters to locations that have been rocked by gun violence.
An immediate deployment of the Medical Mobile Unit to areas where displaced unhoused residents are located.
A pathway to establish a South Minneapolis tiny home village with a Housing First approach.
Collaboration with Hennepin County to help fund shelters, which are facing a major fiscal cliff. Service providers, mutual aid volunteers, and neighbors regularly report that after calling the County’s shelter hotline, they learn that there are few, if any, shelter beds available. Prioritizing the Affordable Housing Trust Fund for 30% AMI housing stock.
Pass an ordinance that would enact regulations on components, possession, storage, and use of firearms that would go into effect immediately if the state legislature enacts a statute that gives cities local authority to enact gun control legislation.
Adequately fund the Next Step Program, which provides immediate bedside support for victims of violence, like shootings and stabbings.
Expand gun violence survivor services and fund a “Gun Violence Resiliency Needs Assessment” to identify gaps in service and develop strategies to address and prevent gun violence.

Ann Kim declined to be interviewed for this column. Columnist Laura Yuen writes that restaurateurs and small-business owners have told her privately they believe that misogyny, and perhaps low-key racism, helped fuel the backlash against Kim.
Yuen: After tonight, Young Joni will be gone. Can we stop trying to cancel Ann Kim?
The acclaimed chef and restaurateur has experienced what a friend calls a “horrible year” after public backlash over her position on unionizing.

Based on who his allies are, I suppose it’s not surprising. But the pattern is clear that Richard Carlbom’s version of the DFL has zero interest in growing as a party or welcoming new people into it, despite what he says in a speech.

Solidarity with the trans and NB communities.

I’m proud to represent Robin Wonsley and Michael Wilson as they stick up for their rights and the rights of voters. They spend their time fighting for the people of Minneapolis, and it’s my honor to fight for them.

And this is a message to the landlord donor class: mind yourselves, were watching.

Being a strong mayor sounds like it rules. Everything bad is either the fault of council or your department staff.

But seriously, Deena is absolutely crushing it on the pro-Frey PR lately. So happy for her.

Also from the Department of Born Yesterday:
From the Star Tribune story: The more progressive members of the council voted against extending the contracts and the more moderate council members aligned with Mayor Jacob Frey voted to extend the contracts. The mayor's office doesn't participate in the selection
of the contractors.
