Aid that depends on someone being chosen for help on criteria set by the donor is a terrible way to build a safety net and even in the absence of a safety net, it's really important that we fund groups that spread the help based on objective need, not individual marketing.
Guys I know you’re all going to yell at me here but mutual aid is not meaningfully distinct from the kind of privatized community charity system where poor people go to the church and hope someone has donated a hot meal. It’s not progressive, it’s not effective, it’s not good service provision.

This would be an incredible comedy premise though. A friend group realizes that one of them has been using the others for market research for a decade and they were all carefully selected/guided to be representative norms.

Most archival materials have not been digitized, many would be illegible to AI (handwriting etc) even if they were. But the question came out of the research. There’s no way AI can do that.

See the thing about this site is that “migrant” and “homeless” are both shibboleths of the right, especially when paired, and seeing them together short circuits a lot of brains into believing people said a thing they literally did not say.
Yes, it’s entirely true that many of the migrants who came under the Biden admin did not have housing arranged for them when they arrived and so ended up in homeless shelters at first, at times for months, while they got on their feet. This is 100% true, not an anti-immigrant gotcha, just the facts.
The faction of the the left that lives for harassment is just slamming Matt for this, but he’s correct and this has been considered for years a major cause of the recent homelessness spike. Watching people maliciously misread his very short tweet and call him a “Nazi” is something else.

I read “defend” here as (a very very poorly articulated) version of “you need to know why a model gives the output it does and why that might be bullshit”. Maybe being overly optimistic but that’s what I try to teach when discussing Gen AI in computer science classes anyway…

As a CS professor (and something of a gen AI skeptic), we’re currently thinking a lot about how to best educate students about AI. Ignoring it is not an option — teaching students how these models work, how they can and are being used, and most importantly how they fail really does seem important.
