Pokemon games have gotten bigger since, but none have improved on the feeling you got in Red/Blue that the land you were travelling through was almost infinitely immense.

One of the greatest video game surprises of my childhood was finally seeing a full map of Saffron City and realizing that it was only this big, instead of the size of a massive real-life city like I'd originally assumed.

The real generational divide is people who refuse to watch a video if it could be an article versus people who refuse to read an article if it could be a video

I get that the news cycle is packed right now, but I just heard from a colleague at the Smithsonian that this is fully a GIANT SQUID BEING EATEN BY A SPERM WHALE and it’s possibly the first ever confirmed video according to a friend at NOAA

imagine if a family of beavers randomly showed up right now and finished whatever thing you've been putting off
In early 2025, beaver activity in the Brdy Protected Landscape Area, Czech Republic, contributed to the restoration of a wetland ecosystem. A family of beavers constructed a series of dams that coincidentally accomplished environmental goals of the Czech government, which had delayed its proposed project since 2018 for bureaucratic and financial reasons. The beaver-built dams saved the Czech government approximately US$1.2 million,

In Metal Gear Solid (1998), when fighting the Hind D helicopter, you're advised to keep track of its location by listening to the stereo panning. But if you've set "Sound" to "Monaural" in the Options menu, you get this exclusive addition. . .

(could be wrong, of course- I haven't read Nealuchi's supports at all and it's been a decade since I played RD)

(no quote, just wanted to respond to the ep)

I've always read the Nealuchi-Naesala relationship as Naesala and his former caretaker, not literal father and son. Think Marcus-Roy. "My hatchling" = the birdman equivalent of "my child" as a pet name for anybody 50 years younger than you.

I’ve often thought of genres as tags, not categories.

It’s helpful to understand that being one thing does not preclude you from being another thing, too.

I mean, the categorization isn’t really there to make us happy, it’s so readers can find the thing that they want to read. If you opened a menu and the entrees were all just labeled “MEAT” it’s not that helpful.

I crunched the numbers on game console price drops back to 1977 to figure out why today's consoles are so historically expensive.

Short answer: It's not inflation.

Long answer: arstechnica.com/gaming/2025/...
Today’s game consoles are historically overpriced
Ars analysis shows missing price cuts are costing console consumers hundreds of dollars.

an appropriate response to your product killing a child after months of psychological manipulation and torture is to take the product off the market before it kills again and the fact that this isn’t universally accepted right now is incredibly frightening
