in general (not just in this area) there is a pattern online where someone has this complaint about their life, and then a crowd comes up to savage them (“another mediocre guy looking for sympathy”). i am usually left cold by the entire thing
But when an angry fellow screams that the person who got hired wasn't the best scholar, he's lying. He can't know.

And when the response is that the angry fellow was mediocre, those folks are lying too. They can't know either.

We've designed the system to avoid knowing. Knowing would be painful.

The speed and sincerity of people who chime in to let you know that /no speed/ is the correct speed in the left lane, everyone has to move right so people can treat it like the Autobahn.

They feel so certain they are right that if you're being tailgated in the left lane, you're at fault. Crazy.

Okay, I'll make a thread of 50 indie games which I'll add to over the week, staring with.

1. Carimara

Play as a little goblin creature summoned by a witch to investigate what's haunting her cottage, it's a creepy bite-size mystery akin to the Frog Detective games, and has gorgeous visuals.

Still reading through the bizarre and unhinged new NSS- I remember when the rumours about early drafts started circulating, some commentators rushed to claim that it would probably just contain boilerplate business-as-usual fare, thanks to an apolitical natsec community.

I think what helped me immensely was that I was in an environment where I felt comfortable asking my classmates to help me understand things I didn't quite get, and was happy to help them in turn when they needed it.
A note on learning physics ⚛️ for starting PhD students:
At the risk of saying something completely useless because everyone has it worked out

There is no magic trick, your classmates *may* be faster than you, but they are still studying as long as they need to and you are quite capable of the same

Do you think it's possible to have the benefits of economic development without losing magic? What I mean is, when people talk about science vs beauty, economics vs. community, I believe what's fundamentally being identified is that for humans, scarcity is bad and rarity is good.

Essentially everyone is damned to oblivion almost as soon as they're dead and in the ground

The few flickering moments I've seen someone come back to life, as if they were sitting right next to me, has been when I heard their voice in their writing

Don't give that up
Saw a post today that advised writers to stop writing as if a human will read it and start writing for an LLM that will be summarising.

As someone who really enjoyed trying to develop a peculiar but readable authorial voice, I find this incredibly depressing.

basically, when someone you love dies, it isn’t just them that you miss, but the parts of yourself that person brought out of you that can never be brought out again.

i feel that with my dad.
