If you're in Southeast Michigan, this set of resources I've compiled have a lot of organizations working to protect those under threat from the new administration.
ryan.blacksky.app
Happy to share that for #GivingTuesday I've created my 5th (!) edition of Ryan's Community Giving Guide for SE Michigan. Please share widely, and let me know if you discover/donate to someone new through this work - it really helps!

You can grab the full PDF version at www.henyard.com/giving
Cover of Ryan's Community Giving Guide - 2024-25 for Southeast Michigan. Main image is a photo of a sandhill crane, head bowed forward, with its heart-shaped crest centered in the frame ahead of a flurry of grey feathers. Bottom of the image has the Creative Commons attribution information (CC-BY-NC-SA) and a tag saying ' Created by Ryan Henyard (me!) v5.0 - henyard.com/giving - edit and adapt for your own community text from the 'about the author' page: I originally created this giving guide as a way to amplify the challenges my communities were facing in 2020, and I’ve heard from lots of people who expressed a desire to help but don’t know where to start or who to support. I created this guide to highlight and uplift some of the important work happening, and encourage you to choose some of these efforts to support through donations, volunteering or mutual aid for Giving Tuesday and beyond.

For our fifth (!) edition, I have made some additions and changes to the organizations listed in the guide, and expanded sections on programs. Our communities are filled with people dedicated to building a more just and loving future, and I’m glad to be able to share some of that with you.

Because this is centered around my communities and values, it is not a comprehensive guide by any means; the guide and artwork are both available under a Creative Commons license (CC-BY-NC-SA) and I would be elated if others spread love for community-based work in their own communities. The best gift I can receive during this season is knowing someone contributed to these efforts after reading this guide, so feel free to share your support for these community pillars with me on social media or email.

In love and solidarity,
Ryan Henyard

🥴

I understand why people *want* the police to intervene--normies are like, 'I thought cops are supposed to arrest people doing crimes, ICE is right there doing crimes, go do your thing'

but police organizations take nearly every opportunity to be like, 'oh you misunderstood what our thing is'

Real shit!!! 😂 Made me laugh remembering how when my sister graduated they wanted to take a picture with her at Big J's so we stopped by in the cap & gown 😭

The way Atlanta people argue about what areas are considered “real Atlanta” and what isn’t is so funny to me. I don’t notice it with any other city.

Clearly saw the trial balloon for this with the arrest of Ras Baraka in Newark, as @jesspish.bsky.social wrote in May.

Many of us have lived in cities that republicans have declared can't govern themselves, and had our resources pillaged & co-opted before; have to stand up now while we can.
jesspish.bsky.social
Jailing local politicians, refusing to allow politicians to take their position...this is how MAGA seeks to destroy local sovereignty -- the idea that some people cannot govern themselves. We should resist these efforts.

disempower is a good framing. I think now defund isn't enough; police need to lose their political power.

For the 5011th time, pleading with electeds that the cops are not their little friends, and it's in their own best interest to defund and dis-empower them as soon as possible

In a fight between Pritzker and and police, who is going to win? This is what happens when both parties allowed law enforcement to become one of the most powerful political actors in the country -- a taxpayer-funded political movement that wants to kill people.

Local cops are not on the side of Democratic politicians or under their actual control. People refuse to understand this too even though we've been making this point for decades.

This very very very bad. I cannot stress this enough. I said that they crossed the Rubicon with arresting Ras Baraka several months ago. This is very bad and portends more bad things for regular people.

Additionally depending on how this Chicago deployment unfurls closing out this fundraiser will give me the space to not go to a gig if it means passing through multiple troop checkpoints that are not safe for me.
authorwinifred.blacksky.app
Oh Hai 👋🏿

If I can keep these gig contracts steady, the last 15% of this campaign (that I started in October 2022) will go to the bigger ticket items that I still need like neonate appropriate pulse oximeters, for ex., and my licensure exam fees.

This is what I came for.

- Grim that media barons are buying up mainstream media and making them fascism-enabling propaganda engines

- ULTAGRIM that so many of the big-name journalists escaping that fire are voluntarily leaping directly into a completely separate newsletter website trap set by the same fascists

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

Rudy talks about the work going on to remediate some of this foolishness; grateful for the work, and it sucks that the Blacksky team has to change it's timetables because of other folks' foolishness. Put some money on their books and help us get a little bit freer
