One big takeaway from Mamdani bringing YIMBYs into his transition is that advocates can often gain a lot of power by

1.) having useful answers to questions and accurate information

2.) being reasonably polite and pleasant to elected officials

3.) understanding the actual mechanics of government

Also, when you say people saying "Dems would win everywhere with a Mamdani-style platform," I think it's important to remember that that platform delivered the most charismatic candidate in recent history a whopping 50.4% of the vote against a street vigilante and actual vampire, in New York City

Every 2-4 years, a bunch of left-wing populists have the brilliant thought “Hey, what if people’s resentment of social minorities is actually just sublimated resentment for capitalist elites?” and then we get to spend 2-4 years once again learning that no, it’s very much the reverse

Democrats are responsible for every intemperate comment from every random anonymous internet communist.

But the Republican president who is at the center of a cult of personality that has consumed the entire GOP can call for mass executions, and somehow this isn’t laid at the feet of Republicans.
Weird. Nothing on the @nytimes.com homepage about the President of the United States calling for the execution of members of the opposition in response to their political speech.
Important: House Dem leaders just said Trump's call for execution of Dems has prompted them to contact US Capitol Police and House Sergeant at Arms to "ensure the safety of these members and their families."

Treat Trump like an unhinged menace. He's weak and in deep political trouble. Don't let up.

One of the things that frustrates me most about the Left currently is that they refuse to accept the notion that their ideas may be unpopular—no matter how “correct” they may be.

What ends up happening is a group of people railing against “elites” instead of working to win people over.
Right, this is true, but the OVERWHELMING evidence of the past 100 years of American life is that vastly more people want space and a car than a smaller unit and a car-free lifestyle. This is mostly why the suburban share of US population has grown relentlessly for the entire 20th and 21st century
Some people put a premium on space in my experience, others put a premium on not having to have a car and not being isolated out in the suburbs

Journalists deserve to be spit on in the street for how they gleefully helped get us where we are now
What I know is there are still great journalists - even at elite media outlets - who are doing good work. Adopting a knee-jerk cynicism about all they do abandons those journalists. And it's lazy. And it plays into hands of authoritarians who WANT people to distrust all fact-based journalism.
Come on Eric….you know what these means about the Times and a lot of elite media

there are a lot of dudes whose dreams of a class revolt against capital and big business have been shattered by the reality that racial and social resentments cut deeper than class, and consistently respond to that reality by looking for ways to ignore, rationalize, or dismiss those resentments

When prices were going up under Biden there was a constant deluge of news stories about it because the media did not like Biden and wanted him to lose. Under Trump there is not a constant deluge of news stories about coffee prices because they like Trump and want him to win
everything is on fire these days, sure, but how is it that 50% of all news stories are not about how I just spent $20 on a bag of store brand coffee at fucking costco

This is right. The core of Trumpism, the attraction of Trumpism, is abuse. It's a politics for abusers, but of a particular kind: abuse bound up in status anxiety. It appeals to men who don't like that others are rising, because they know, even unconsciously, that they're not good enough to compete.
MAGA, at its core, is a cult of abuse. The right to abuse, the justification for abuse, the dopamine rush they get from abusing others, is built into every policy, every program, every line of rhetoric. They identify with abusers because they want to abuse people.
So this is happening

The thing is, it’s just not true that everything is either capitalism or a cultural issue that the capitalists came up with to distract you from how capitalism is the real problem. This is diseased thinking.

Populism/Popularism is the belief that you can end the problem of world hunger by giving everyone a sandwich.
Populism/Popularisms problem is that if you promise everyone a free pony and deliver on it, the people who voted for it will probably still end up mad at you, because the streets are now covered in horseshit.
but it's not.

Because fundamentally policy is always interpreted through different individual lenses, and in the end the outcomes are completely different from what people imagined.
