This is perfect for a city like Jersey City. If we could make our neighborhoods truly safe for pedestrians and cyclists, we wouldn't need to rely on cars so much. Imagine getting to school or to the PATH station or to the bus this comfortably!

Look how wonderful Low Traffic Neighborhoods can be!

This is the Van Gogh Walk in Lambeth, London. This street is decades old but built for people first yet still has access for last block travel & emergency vehicles! @openplans.org @nyc.streetsblog.org @thewaroncars.bsky.social @nycdot.bsky.social

This would be great for JC. Too many mega SUVs and trucks taking up 1.5 parking spaces.

Charging parking permits or vehicle registration fees by weight seems to be catching on. At least a few Montreal boroughs, DC, and Zurich to my knowledge. Short of directly regulating vehicle size (which should obviously be done), this is a good step. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...
Meet the Montreal Mayor Who Declared War on SUVs
Oversized vehicles are devouring street parking spaces in the Canadian city. So one borough’s mayor is fighting back with bigger fees for hefty trucks and SUVs.

The crosswalk in Oakland where 4yo Jalen Gomez died was made less visible & lacked a basic safety feature - Bergen Co won't say why.

In 2020, a state grant to make ped safety upgrades along Ramapo Valley Road was denied. Now ped deaths in NJ are at 30-year highs.

Oakland pedestrian death raises questions for Bergen County amid hurdles to upgrades
A dangerous intersection in Oakland illustrates the challenges for towns who need county and state funds to make crosswalk upgrades.

Initial reports are coming in about how well the #Hoboken CLEAR parking enforcement is working. How exciting to finally have useable bike lanes and bus stops! Have you ever seen the Washington Street bike lane this clear? 😍

Let there be light! On the bike lane! (& sidewalks, and murals.) Today #JerseyCity lit the new streetlights in the once-forbidding areas under the overpass at 12th Street., over the Coles Street curb-raised lane & around the corner by the big murals. The bit under the 14th St. bridge is lit now too.

I've made an attempt to calculate car free % and other demographic stats from the Census Bureau ACS (2019-2023 5 year average) by Jersey City ward. Follow up posts will talk a bit about methodology and share some maps.

Not a big surprise: Jersey City came in second. People need to stop pretending we’re some inherently car-dependent exurb, and embrace an urban transportation mix, with more and better mass transit, biking and walking.

Big surprise: New York is the only US city where most households don't have cars. But there are some big zero-car minorities across the river in New Jersey and in Washington, Boston and San Francisco. From new column with gift link: www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...

C’mon @citibikenyc.bsky.social This station is full again and you’re not giving any points to move bikes to other stations, same with the station closest to it. This is one of the busiest stations in Jersey City, manage it better

Complete lawlessness on Pavonia approaching Summit. A bunch of cars just decide to drive in the opposite direction to over take the traffic at the intersection. Just crazy.

Governor Murphy has defunded investment in NJ Transit by $2.4B over 10 years while increasing funding for highway expansions to $24B over 10 years. It is no accident our trains and buses are constantly breaking down.

The problem with takes like these is that they fail to consider how vehicle fleet turnover actually works, at all, a massive and fatal blind spot that dooms climate activism.

It's true that China is leading the world with EVs. But the U.S. is leading the world with gas-guzzling trucks & SUVs.
